The clubs continued the scholarship of 5100.00 and started a second sim- ilar scholarship. The money for these scholarships was raised by a concert in April. The Band played for the various activities in the school as Well as outside of school. They furnished music for the basketball games, the Parent-Teacher's meetings and the County Historical Society at Valley Forge on Lancaster County Day. The Band is headed by Elwood Schwan M'29, and directed by Mr. List. Cemhined Orchestra The past year has shown a very marked increase in the number of boys and girls interested in the instrumental music work of the Orchestra. Some ninety students are enrolled in the two orchestras under the direction of Leigh E. Wittell. The Junior Orchestra has made very satisfactory progress this semester. Two rehearsals are held weekly. Boys and girls upon entering High School are admitted to the Junior Orchestra. On receiving sufficient training or as soon as

66 THE VIDETTE Extra Curricular Activities BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL Seventeen extra-curricular clubs were organized this semester. The plan adopted is a new one and permits each club to meet during school time which heretofore was not done. The clubs met twice each month. On the third Wednes- day of each month a club presented a program in the auditorium. J A CK RHEN High School Cooperative lntlustrial Course The Cooperative Industrial Department which is included in the curriculum of the Boys' High School was started September 1, 1926. A group of about 38 boys have been following this course during the past year. 74 have applied for this semester's course. Due to the limited facilities only 45 boys were accepted. It has established a better feeling between the council and the student body. It has raised more than enough money for a motion picture machine. The council has rewarded the fellows interested in the activities of the school by awarding Certificates of Merits. 68 THE VIDEATTE personal ability permits, students are transferred to the Senior Orchestra, where music of a more difficult and professional nature is used. The Senior Orchestra has experienced one of its most active years. With a membership of fifty boys and girls this orchestra, under Mr. Wittell's direc- tion, has developed into a first-rate high school orchestra. A rehearsal lasting two hours is held each Wednesday evening. An entirely new repertoire of music was played by the orchestra this year. Concerts were given at the Pennsyl- vania State Educational meeting, at various Civic Clubs, Parent-Teachers' meet- ings, over the radio, as well as at both High Schools. Retail Salesmainiship Training in salesmanship is a reality at Stevens High School and during the past year twenty-three girls have learned the psychological point of a sale, the actual presentation of material to the customer in such a way at to lead to a satisfied buyer and seller. Up to this time Miss Kathryn Abel, Miss Anna Rich, the art supervisor of the Lancaster schools, and Mr. John Oller have borne the work of teaching in this course. Theory is valuable and one-half of each school day is employed in obtaining the theoretic side, but theory without practice is not proved by the learner. As a result the other half of the school days and Saturday of each week are given to practicing the theory learned. Merchants themselves and patrons at the various stores which are cooperat- ing have expressed their satisfaction at the service given by these girls. This has been evinced by the requests from merchants for more representatives of this course for service during the coming year, these girls to be employed in addi- tion to the present ones who are to be retained. This fact would surely seem to indicate the value of this course in the business of today. What Shall We Read? One of the cardinal objectives of education is a worthy use of leisure time. The summer vacation provides one with the longest period of leisure, hence this is a timely questiong what shall we read? Instead of dipping into numerous subjects and failing to reach the depths of any one of them, the summer vacation provides an opportunity for the de- velopment of a reading habit which shall follow a subject or an author to a fair extent of its possibilities. This is really a study of the subject. For recreation reading, for enjoyment, it is wise to see that the reading is not done extravagantly, but that the books chosen are ofa high literary value, providing wholesome mental food. A proper choice of reading will result in the development of that sense of discrimination that recognizes value. Would this not be a good time for reading some of those longer novels you have always in- tended reading, like: Count of Monte Cristo , Les Miserables , Cloister and the Hearth , Romola , Guy Manneringn, Don Quixote , Kennilworth. STOP! READ! AND GROW!
