Trying to block out the sound, lane Lewis, Carol Mercer, Mary Bramen, and Debbie Wood watch the rocket they built blast ati. Denise Bates, Sue Katip, Andrea Hewitt, Mr. lim Mandley, Tina Anderson, and Cindy Alexander share their anticipation, but Ion Plummer is too busy igniting the rocket from the car's battery. The launching is one of the space science Class projects. Approximately Z0 new faces graced the classrooms, some filling new positions cmd others replacing former teachers who had left Mason. Some of them came from other schools, but for many it was their first year in the teaching profession. Eager participants in the eighth grade bloclc class are Bill Healy LN-M' Tony Wood, and Garry Moses. inth grade block split into English, civics Something new aroused the interest of ninth grade students with the split of civics and English classes. Most ninth graders felt they were able to learn more extensively about English and Civics with two separate- classes instead of the combined block of time. Several new teachers were added to the staff in this area. Another change involved eighth grade block classes. Instead of the farmer one hour daily for integrated study of language arts and social studies, the blocks were extended to two hours. The return to full days of school made this possible.
