It was destined to be- national, and immediately began to h ' ded b the establish chapters throughout the West and South. Thoug impe y Civil War, it continued prosperous until I879,WhC1'1,by the absorption of the Alpha Sigma Chi, BE and has since been increasing in size and influence, now numbering HE fraternity of BETA THE TA THETA P1 gained an important hold in the East, forty-nve active and fourteen alumni chapters. The government of the fraternity is principally in the hands of alumni officers, constituting a Board of Directors, regularly incorporated under the laws of the State of Ohio, and responsible to the annual national conven- tions.. The fraternity publications are, princip y, now in its 'eleventh year and the pioneer among college fraternity journals, all the Bam Tlzeicz Pi, a monthly the catalogues, of which the 1881 edition is a handsome volume of 4oo pages, illustrated by numerous steel engravings, and the Song Books, the last, just issued, containing all the songs and music of the fraternity. BETA THETA Pr is noted for the loyalty of its alumni. Among its promi- nent members are: judges Harlan, Wood and Matthews, of the United States Supreme Court, Schuyler Colfax, ex-Vice-President of the United States, United States Senators Latham and Booth, of California, Harlan and McDill, of Iowa, McDonald, Voorhees and Morton, of Indiana. Among Congressmen, Springer, of Illinois, Newberry, of Michigan, De Motte, of Indiana, Gratz Brown, of Missouri, john Coburn, of Indiana, Humphrey Marshall, of Kentucky, etc. Albert G. Porter and T. T. Crit- tenden, Governors of Indiana and Missouri ', ex-Governors Hardin, of Mis- souri, Matthews, of West Virginia, Harvey, of Wisconsin, Nance, of Ne- braska, Bennett, of Idaho, Latham, of California, Oliver P. Morton, of Indiana, and I-Ioadley, of Ohio. We would note among those eminent in educational and scientific circles: Dr. C. N. Sims, Chancellor of Syracuse University, Ormond Beatty, President of Centre College, A. D. Hepburn, President of Miami University, john Bascom, President of the University of Wisconsin, and W. T. Reid, President of the University of California, Professors Young, of Princeton , Kirkwood, of Wooster, Watson, of Michi- gan, Newberry and Price, of Columbia, Venable, of Virginia, Wood, of Stevens, Burgess, of Columbia, Safford, of Vanderbilt, etc. The Forty-fifth Annual Convention will be held at Cleveland, Ohio, August 28, 29 and 30, 1884.
