EDITORIAL. ONTRARY to the predictions of many, we take pleasure in presenting to you the second issue of the BOLT. In its enlargement, and, we hope, decided improvement over last year's hasty production, we think we have clearly established the- fact that the BoLT is no longer an experiment, but a permanently established publication. We announce that we have come to stay. Among other changes, it was thought best by the Editorial Board to have two editorslfrom each fraternity, instead of one as formerly. The other lfgraternitiesfevincing no desire to accept the privilege of representation afccorded them in our las-t issue, we placed at their disposal space for their Chapter lists and any other matter they desired to furnish, but our offer, meeting with the same discourteous silence as heretofore, we have been compelled to omit, rather than run the risk of misrepresenting them. In the eafly part of last December, the Mu Chapter of Chi Phi Fraternity sprang into existence at Stevens. In adherence to the principles which gave rise to the BOLT, we cordiallyinvited them to unite with us in its publica- tion, but they, preferring to maintain a neutral position this year at least, did not accept, but furnished material for the two pages offered to all the fraternities. We earnestly hope to see them represented on our editorial staff next year. ' 1 Amid the hurry and flurry of college life we have again been painfully reminded that all of us are mortalf Death has once more appeared in our midst, and cut down two of our most promising young alumni. With the opening of the Institute in September came the sad intelligence that our genial friend MAX HARING had departed this life. Mr. HARING was a member of the class of '83, graduating last june, and one of the special artists and .warmest supporters of the BoLT. For only two short months did he follow his profession before passing away. Again the sombre Reaper came, and his untiring arm struck down among us WILMER G. CARTWRIGHT, M.E.,-'82, on the twenty-third of February last. The deceased fhad been, ever since his graduation. the assistant of Prof. THURSTON in the Mechani- cal Laboratory, and well did he fill his position. Of our one hundred and thirty-one alumni, seven have given up this earthly struggle. , The past year has been a most successfulone for Stevens. Never have the gods been more propitious totheir chosen one. The number of students has, as in former years, steadily increased, our number now being forty more than last year. In every department is improvement visible. In the appear- ance of Prof. THURsToN's new books the classes have found a welcome

8' THE BOLT. To all the professors for the sympathy they have shown us when we have been overworked and in our distress have petitioned them. . To Professor and Mrs. THURsToN for the interest they have taken in the welfare of the upper classes, and their pleasant entertainments, which will ever be remembered. . To Professor and Mrs. LEEDS for their successful efforts in promoting the social enjoyment of the students, and for the very kind interest they have evinced in the success of this BOLT. And especially are the editors indebted to Mrs. LEEDS, whose endeavors have contributed so much toward their success. Lastly, -to the editors' of the BOLT-had they not better be thanked now than never-for the imposing monument they have sought to erect over their yawning graves, and for their herculean efforts to give offence to nobody. Trusting that our BOLT may be a source of as much pleasure to you as its production has been to us, for the year 1884 We bid you adieu.
