Coach Ethan Hanks made the following comment concerning the 1969-70 basketball season. Because we were starting from scratch I'd say We made the most improvement of any team in the state. To come as close to beating the Cobblers and going to state as we did is about the best that any new team can do. Gur defense was the most important part. Although We had a little size disadvantage, l'd say we had the best defensive drive in the state. Raiders play B. B. November 28 saw the Raiders lose to the Huron Tigers 73-70 in the first game in the school's history. The following night they sank five points in an overtime and the Mitchell Kernals went down to the Raiders 81-76. Traveling to Pierre for their next battle, the Raiders were unable to overcome Pierre's experience as they were downed 78-69. December 13 they were bumped off for the second time by Scottsbluff Neb. 81-74. Using their home court for the first time on Dec. 19 didn't seem to help much as they were whipped by 3rd ranked QWyoming confer- encej Cheyenne Central 85-67. fi Dave Collins attempts a little fast foot work in trying to by-pass a member of the opposing team, A Patriot seems to be up in arms upon encounter- ing Mark Benner, On Dec. 26 and 27 the Raiders hosted a holiday tourney in the Stevens' gym. Par- ticipating in the two-day events were the Cobblers, Sioux Falls Washington, and Sioux Falls Lincoln. Washington slipped past the Raiders 69-67 in their first engagement of the year. The Lincoln Patriots lost to the Raiders 68-58 on the following night. The celebration over the Lincoln game was short lived when, on January 3, Spear- fish traveled here for a 66-53 win over the Big Blue. Jan. 9 saw the very first intra-city clash between the Central Cobblers and SHS Raiders. In a game in which the final two minutes were to tell the outcome of the game the Cobblers emerged on top. Dave Collins narrowed the margin to 66-61 in the final seconds with a fantastic 25 foot jump- shot. 153
