1-416 Wm...-1 Injured Raider gets help from someone who knows, A fourth place ranking in the final state high school poll was the reward for the defen-' sive minded first-year Raider' football team. They were victorious 7-6 over Pierre in their first game. The defense allowed only 53 yards and Terry Danielson's 38 yard punting average kept the Pierre Governor's deep in their own territory. Against the large Sioux City Central team it was a blocked punt by Kim Gary that put the Raiders ahead 7-0. However, even though Danielson averaged over 42 yards a punt, the Raider offense was unable to roll and the team suffered their first loss 7-14. ' The offense, in the form of Dave Collins and Dean Bunkowski, began to jell against Sioux Falls Washington. The two picked up a total of 147 yards but the Raiders lost the game 12-6 in the last 16 seconds. . I The toughest contest of the season came as the Raiders met Sioux Falls Lincoln, ranked number one in the state. The stout Raider defense held the Patriots four times inside the 21 yard line before bowing 20-0. ln snow at Cheyenne East, then ranked fourth in Wyoming, Dean Bunkowski raced 71 yards for the lone Raider touchdown and a 7-6 victory. At the Raiders' first Homecoming game Rick Jarboe set the pattern as he returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown against Alliance, Nebraska. The offense began rolling as Bunkowski had 20 carries for 70 yards and Jarboe scored a second time on a 14 yard pass from Tim Crawford. The first crosstown sports clash with R.C. Central was a real fan-thriller. Although, the Stevens Raiders amassed 444 yards to the 211 for Central in the game, the Cobblers led 12-6 at halftime as a result of 2 Raider muffs. Second half long runs of Bunkowski, 50 yards and 83 yards, paved the way to a 28-20 Raider victory. , Sturgis came to town, determined to hold the greatly improving Raiders. It was the Raiders 10-0 at the end of the third quarter on a 30 yard Collins to Jenniges pass and a Ken- ny Asheim field goal. Then the Raiders offense exploded for 32 points. Bob Hatch picked off a pass after the clock ran out and raced 58 yards for the final touchdown. Both Collins and Bunkowski carried for more than 100 yards. The final game, against the Watertown Arrows, saw the Raiders offense pick up where it left off in the Sturgis game as Stevens went ahead 28-6 before the half. Although subs played half the game, Bunkowski carried 21 times for 119 yards, Jarboe scored on a 35 yard Collins pass and the defense, not to be outdone, scored as Pratt Harkins intercepted an Arrow hand- off and romped 33 yards for 6 points. The final: Stevens 35 and Watertown 13.
