December 1, 1969 marked an important day for Rapid City. On that day Rapid City Stevens High School was opened. The school was named for Paul C. Stevens, a Superintendent of the Rapid City Public Schools for fourteen years. Mr. Stevens helped greatly in mak- ing the public aware of the need for another high school in Rapid City and is credited with getting the bond issue for the school passed by an over- whelming majority on the first vote. Ground was broken in April of 1967 for the ed- ucational complex designed by the architectural firm of Aukerman and Mazourek. The complex in- cluded an academic building, fine arts auditorium, gymnasium, and power house shared with the ad- joining Black Hills Area Vocational Technical School. Materials and labor for the school cost over five million dollars. The school was scheduled to open in Septem- ber, 1969, but due to the delayed arrival of some necessary equipment, students of Stevens and Rapid City Central shared the Central building through November. Finally, on December 1, the Stevens building gained its most important part, the teachers, administrators, and students. These gave Stevens its personality.
