'Ju ' 4 THE PRINCIPAL'S DAY IS A LONG ONE. To the Class of 1954: Congratulations on this tangible evidence of your teamwork in completing another major school project with the success that has marked many of your efforts of the past four years. Your yearbook has a very appropriate and thought-provoking theme, A Day at Stevens. A day in your school life is really an important event. So much can happen, even in the few hours when you are actually in school, that may have far-reaching effects. It may be the day on which you decide your future career, or the one when you discover that a certain teacher has your welfare at heart and is a good source of advice for you, or that special one when you make a new friend among your schoolmates. Character and progress can be attained only by living each day to the best of one's abilities. I sincerely hope that for each of you the total of all your school days adds up to prepara- tion for an upright, interesting, and useful life in the days to come. I should like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Irma Willey for so graciously accepting the task of guiding the staff of the Red and Black in Mr. Paquette's year of absence for study. She has fulfilled her role as adviser cheerfully and efficiently. The class of 1954 may well add their deep grati- tude to mine for her services. Devotedly yours, Wfw

THE EDITORS HAVE SPENT THOUGHTFUL DAYS PREPARING THIS BOOK. In choosing A Day at Stevens as the theme of the 1954 RED AND BLACK, the Editors weighed carefully the advantages and problems of such a theme. With the use of such a technique, a simple chronological sequence is established by which a day's program, from morning to night, can be represented. However, it is obvious that if a single day were illustrated, many seasonal activities and social events, essential in the construction of any school annual, would have to be excluded. Therefore, the activ- ities of various days have, of necessity, been compassed into one representative day. Thus a broad, complete picture of student life at Stevens has been presented, a well-balanced program of the curricular and extra-curricu- lar, since social activities play nearly as large a part in modern education as do classrooms and books. The student at Stevens has a full day, a day designed to prepare him mentally, physically, and mor- ally for the problems encountered in life. 7g'.0L-CULCI A I The Edilors Richard Lovejoy, Editor, and John Pierce, Assistant Editor, review the 1953 RED AND BLACK for ideas.
