A . ; s. 4 0y From Within Ourselves Stetson University, a view from within ... a view from within Stet- son ... a view from within our- selves. Stetson affords many view- points, vantage points from which we observe and grow. In our time here we learn to view the world differently; we mature from the bright-eyed freshman, who finds in each thing newness and challenge, to the confident senior, seeing him- self as a part of life at Stetson and somehow knowing that if he had not attended, the University would be somewhat less than what it is. Our view from within encompasses the full scope of our lives in a period during which we pursue the highest of ideals, knowledge, and values — this period known as our collegiate experience. From our viewpoint, looking back over the past and anticipating the future, we realize the impor- tance of the people in our Stetson experience. VVe see a vivid image of that certain professor who had such an impact on the path our life is to follow. We see with fondness that particular person whom we chose to love. We remember the late night conversation with a friend in which we examined closely our perception of life and did not emerge unchanged. Time shall change our viewpoint, but may it never change our view of Stetson. We have grown and learned, and made memories of people that will last a lifetime. That is our view from within . . . JOHN L. MOORE Class of 88 — A VIEW FROM WITHIN — : President Pope Duncan addresses the students and faculty at the 1986 Convocation ceremony. DR. POPE ALEXANDER DUNCAN Pope Duncan, a native of Georgia, came to Stetson in 1977 to serve as its seventh president. During the next 10 years, the University would progress in the areas of endowment, academics, faculty salaries, and campus renovation. Stetson achieved this under Dr. Duncan ' s leadership with the STETSON $50,000,0(X) campaign. I In the latter part of the Duncan Years, the University attained another goal: national recognition. Stetson has been recognized in several national publications as one of the best colleges or universities in the Southeastern United States. Dr. Duncan has been a member of the faculties of Stetson, Mercer University,, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as president of thej Association of Church Related Colleges and Universities of the South, and as a member of the Florida Council of 100. He and his wife, Margaret — who is a published poet — have three daughters. Although Dr. Duncan is retiring as president this academic year, Stetson is fortunate to have this relationship continue. The Board of Trustees has honored Dr. Duncan by asking him to serve as the University ' s second Chancellor. V. 2 Opening

e o Friends On Campus One of the most rewarding and enjoyable positions on this cam- pus is that of the FOCUS staff member. We are the first people that new students meet upon their arrival at Stetson. Staff members assist new students and help them to integrate into campus life. More importantly, though, we are their friends. The FOCUS staff operates un- der the leadership of Jayne Mar- lowe, Director of Student Life, who keeps us on track and pro- vides us with suggestions, time, patience, and support. The backbone of the FOCUS program is the FOCUS group ses- sion. This is when each staff mem- ber meets with a group of new students and provides them with both information and an opportu- nity to meet many other students. Activities organized and conduct- ed by our staff included work- shops, a dance, a luau — The Goombay Smash , a beach party, and a nationally recognized enter- tainment icebreaker session called PLAYFAIR. FOCUS is not only beneficial to the new students, but to the staff as well. Many feel that their in- volvement has been the most fun and fulfilling experience of their college life. We hope that each of you will have the opportunity to participate in this great happening and get your own VIEW FROM WITHIN.
