Page Forty four 1 9 4 6 XTNQ Naf 'bfxk BASKETBALL ARDLY had the echoes of cheerrng for the great football team dred down when Coach Zapustus followed through wrth a fast hoop qurntet that went through the season wrnnrng eleven and losrng but three games Three varsrty regulars held over from last season formed the nucleus for the team At the forward spots were Kennre Stewart and Frank Dockendorff a couple of hardworkrng boys who specralrzed on off angle srde shots and layups Brg jack Callahan rn the prvot proved to be the mam trouble to the opposr tron wrth hrs sprnnrng bucket shots Stan Ferrrs and oe Lombardr handled the back court dutres very effectrvely and contrrbutecl greatly to the scorrng especrally on looprng long shots Meg Hoxre was the versatrle srxth man who proved rmaluable to the team A Sophomore combo of Hess Gaynor MacDon ald and Hurry gave the frrst strrngers relref and assrstance rn attarnrng therr formrdable rec ord Startrng slovs dropprng two out of therr frrst three games but catchrng frre and romp mg for erght strarght wrns before bowrng to undefeated Rockland Hrgh and then takrng the last two games rnto camp the team was rewarded wrth an rnvrte to the newly formed Class C rn the Eastern Massachusetts School boy Tournament at Boston Garden The boys were elrmrnated rn the second game by a Race horse Weston team after sarlrng over a frne Hanover frve and were justly rewarded by ac companyrng the football team to New York on the Aprrl vacatron Coach oe agarn deserves specral honors for the frne way rn whrch he handled hrs thampronshrp teams In basketball as rn foot ball teamwork and the wrll to wrn spelled the drfference between a great team and just a medrocre group of players Thrs sports year was rndeed a succssful one and one that wrll long be remembered an 55' ff ,MJ ga X735 .rf CATHEDRAL 28 STETSON 21 Decked rn brand new blue and whrte unr forms and sportrng flashy warm up jackets the frve took the court for the frrst game and lost 28 21 Makrng a desperate try rn the frnal two chapters to overtake a huge lead the club fell short of a vsrn when the clock ran out Stan Ferrrs led the assault rn a varn attempt to overtake Cathedral STLTSON 74 HINGHAM l5 'Ihe Devrls regrstered the frrst wrn of the ea on at the expense of Hrngham Hrgh jackre Callahan led the scorrng from hrs prvot spot but ewen rn vrctory the frve needed the drrve and teamwork that seemed to be absent from therr play 59359 BRAINTREE 64 STETSON 74 Fre uefrt defensrve lapses and faulty passrng proved the down fall of the frve as an alert and snappy Brarntree team took advantage of every break and caprtalrzed them rnto handrng the Devrls therr worst defeat of the year STETSON 30 MIDDLEBORO 75 Frnally the club seemed to frnd some of the talent rn rts ranks and break out wrth an excrt rng and close wrn over a hrghly rated Mrddle boro frve Stan Ferrrs and ackre Callahan found therr eyes to lead the club to the much STETSON 45 AVON 77 Insprred by therr upset wrn of Mrddleboro the Devrls took a frne Avon team rnto camp and drsplayed the best team play and shootrng of the year Ferrrs Callahan and Lombardr took scorrng honors to notch the thrrd vrctory STETSON 41 HOLBROOK 79 Kennre Stewart dropped them rn from all parts of the floor to overcome a frrst quarter lead rnd arded by jack Callahan rn the dyrng mrnutes led the Devrls to therr thrrd strarght wrn and fourth of the year Frnally the some thrng whrch had been lackrng rn prevrous games seemed to be rn the clubs system STETSON 44 CANTON 94 Romprng to a wrn over a green and rnex perrenced Canton club the Devrls were lookrng forward vsrth eagerness to the brg test of the eason the Rockland fray and had therr eyes on the Tech Tourney Class C rnvrte jack Cal lahan and Stan Ferrrs were the brg guns rn the attack and the entrre frve played brrllrant ball to cop the decrsron STETSON 38 STOUGHTON 20 The hot pace of the team was not slackened as they made rt frxe rn a row at the expense of Stoughton Hrgh joe Lombardr was the farr harred boy on the attack and the other four starters all were even wrth seven markers each Several of the subs rncludrng Gaynor Hess and Hurry showed to advantage wrth the var srty and played rated ball A - X ff, X Xys X, i h , D 1 .s , 6 N L L 6 T . a , . 2, ..., , ? ,Q , . .l .
