Norman Lamm President To The Graduates of Srern College for Women: I am pleased ro offer my warmest congratulations and Mazal Tov wishes to students of the class of 1983. I trust that the years you spent with us have been happy and informative ones. Of all schools of Yeshiva University, Stern College has probably made the most significant educational advances these past several years. You are fortunate that you were here to benefit from them. I hope and pray that as you build your families, pursue your vocations or avocations, and assert leadership in the community, you will always reme mber fondly your education, teachers, and fellow students at Stern. May the devoted efforts of the faculty in educating you in both Torah and Madda be fully justified by the success you will achieve in bringing many others into the felicitous circle of Torah. Cordially yours, Norman Lamm President Messages 19

In Mem© O: Dr. David Mirsky Dr. David Mirsky will always be remem- bered ar Srern College. Dr. Mirsky was dean of Srern from 1968 ro 1975. He firsr joined rhe YU faculty in 1948. In 1953 he was named As- sisranr Professor of He- brew and English in 1962, and professor of English in 1966. He served as Dean of Ad- missions from 1963-1968. Following his rerm as SCW dean, he was ap- pointed Acring Vice President for Academic Affairs. Such diverse contributions as Dr. Mirsky made to edu- cation in the secular as well as rhe Jewish world are rare. He had creared and developed numerous educarional radio and television series over rhe last 20 years, and had served in such capaaries as Secrerary of rhe Council of Higher Education Institutions of New York, Executive board member of rhe American Associarion for Jewish Education, evaluator for Middle States Association, to name but just a few of his professional associations. Dr. Mirsky had also been involved in writing and pub- lishing numerous articles and papers for both English and Hebrew publications. Dr. Mirsky received his 3.A. from Yeshiva College in 1942 and was ordained ar RETS in 1945. He pursued his graduate studies in English and Hebrew lirerarure ar Co- lumbia, NYU, and ar rhe Oxford Center for post graduare studies in England as a scholar-in-residence. Dr. Mirsky was a 7rh generation Jerusalemire, born in rhor city in 1921. He will truly be missed. In Loving Memory of our friend who loved and lived the ways of the Torah In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him. The memory of the righteous is for a blessing. (Proverbs 10:7 ' Lisa Wachrenheim 18 Messages

1 W5 ] - r f ■ i 7 KAREN DACON DEAN Insrirurions wirh long histories ond short memories often subscribe to the attitude that there is little comfort in change. By contrast, Stern College, a youth among schools, with a keen memory born our of an awareness of its mission, has made change one of its hallmarks. This has been manifest from the extraordinary moment in 1954 when the college was created through the revolutionary vision and generosity of Mr. Max Stern (a h), to the day four years ago when rhe faculty adopted a new Core Curriculum in the Jewish Studies. We — rhe students, faculty, alumnae and administration, have nor shied away from debating the value of new directions in education and new standards for personal development. These debates have led to majors in computer sciences and accounting, revised graduation requirements which place more emphasis on rhe individual ' s active choice of courses, expanded internship opporruniries in rhe business world, and new adminisrrative procedures of which rhe most notable example is on-line computer regisrrarion. Srudenr leaders in rhe Srudenr Council, the Senate, rhe Academic Srandards and Curriculum Committees have had major roles in affecring rhese changes. This model of shared leadership is a source of pride and grarification ro our college communiry, and, we believe, prepares our graduates well for rhe give and take required for crearive leadership roles in rhe furure. You, rhe graduares of 1983 have received your educarion in rhis dynamic environmenr. Bur, nor all change is hearrening. This last year we lost the builder and stalwarr supporrer of Srern College for Women, rhe man whose consranr caring could be felr in every corner of our home — Mr. Max Srern. I am rold rhar even during his business trips our of rown or our of the country, Mr. Srern would call in daily ro see if his help was needed or rhe College or ar rhe Uni- versity. May his love of learning and his personal inregriry remain forever our inspiration. On behalf of rhe faculry and sraff of Srern College for Women, I wish you much success. May you go from srrengrh ro strengrh in all your undertakings. 20 Messages
