Please watch for me ... As we survey the historical events of our heritage we find that we are shaped by the actions of our ancestors. How a people srrived with such determinorion to pre- serve the integrity of the Torah, notwithstanding any hardships, is a feat beyond belief. Till this day we have been fortunately blessed with pious scholars who instill within us this need to safe- guard the Torah which ultimately protects the people of Israel. As has been said by one of our sages: More than the Jews have protected the Torah, the Torah has protected the Jews. The pictures above are demonstrative of the various ways in which God has given us direction. At the Stern dormitory, we have guards around the clock to ensure our safety against any prowlers . We hove directional signals on every street cor- ner which prevent us from going the wrong w ay. On a more important, spiritual, level we have scholars who expound words of Torah to ensure rhar we do not stray from the right path. The honey and the thorns . . . Honey and rhorns represent rhe extremes of life, while both emanate from natural sources. Honey is sweet and pleasant; thorns rip at our very being and are often obstacles in our paths. Our lives are filled with both. Nuclear activity is destroying our eco- logical environment while it is also achieving great scientific discoveries. Nature itself is full of beauty as well as harmful rhorns. New York City has been a place where we have reaped rhe fruits of knowledge, and enjoyed pleasanr cul- ture experiences, while it has also been the site of demonstrations.
