mi Raiders Suffer Second Defeat In llieir seionci game of the pre- season, the Raiders sent a vei im- proved team against the Marlins of Madison. The game was a close bat- tle through the first half, but Madison broke loose in the second half. Although our team was im- proved, the defensive line needed work as Madison scored six touchdowns. Also, our team did play a much stronger ball game this week. The defensive stars for the Raiders were Sammy Singleton and Jeffrey Botley. Quarterback Joseph Smith had a much better showing than his previous one against the Rams as his offensive strateg) paid off by rank- ing him in the top ten quarterbacks in the city. After this second game of the year. Sterling claimed an 0-2 re- cord as the Madison Marlins fell even at 1-1. The final score of the game was Madison 43 and Sterling 0.

Raiders Lose to Rams In Season Opener 57-6 In their first pre-season game of the year. Sterhng sent a very young and nervous team against a group of state- ranked veterans from Kashmere. Ster- hng anticipated a very tough game and their efforts turned out to be almost in vain. Kashmere dominated the scoreboard as they made touchdown after touchdown. Although the score was in Kashmere ' s favor, the Raiders did have some very outstanding efforts and accomplishments from the game. One such accomplishment would be an 83 yard pass reception by Kerry Blake which was the longest pass reception in the city for five weeks. The final score of the game was Sterling 6 and Ka.shmere 57. 176

Penalties played a key factor for Sterling as key scoring drives were constantly l)eing halted. The Raider defense came alive in the sec- ond half and allowed only two touchdowns the entire evening. A blocked point and the failure of a two- point conversion cost Sterling the game. The final score was Lee 14 and Sterling 12. 178
