PAGE FOUR THE 1945 TIGER SENIOR NEWS A REMINISCENT TALE Twelve short fast years ago proud mammas accompanied then' srx year old offsprlng to school Just to make sure Georgre and Betty got off on the rrght foot That was the frrst day of school for the graduat ing class of 45 Our faces were scrubbed trll they shone and our harr was slrcked back or brarded Some started at Franklrn School wrth Mrss Hummel as the frrst grade teacher and some started at Lmcoln wrth erther Mrss Smrth or Mrss Campbell Our frrst lessons rn school were learnrng to get along wrth the other puprls and then we began to learn the three Rs The really brrght students rn learnrng to read vyere referred to as the red b rds and the rest of us were the bluebrrds Then we were promot ed rnto the second grade where the work vyas more drffrcult and we were expected to act more experr enced We even put on lrttle plays Durrng the thrrd year maybe youll remember the excrtrng and spooky ghost storres Mrss Trrpp told us decrded we had musrcal talents and started us on musrcal rnstruments At the end of the fourth grade there was a musrcal program put on by the students and Drck Qurnn played Londonderry Arr on hrs cornet Erght years later he played Star dust for the senror talent program For several years durrng musrc week a festrval was held rncludrng all the grades from one to twelve At these pageants the students were lrttle prckrnrnres Dutch boys and grrls and manv others Then one day at the end of our frfth r ear we lrned up and marched dorrn to the arrplane shaped burld rng of Junror hrgh where we were assrgned to our home rooms and got acquarnted wrth our new fellow students from the other school Durrng our Junror hrgh school ca reers me earned the usual amount of honor bars and shrelds and en tered essay and spellrng contests Many of us belonged to Mrs Jones musrc electrve tl rs or chorus groups and sang for many affarrs about toryn We also remember our Jaunts to the theater or the trrp to the park for a watermelon feast sent Peggy Rasmussen to the C Y ,C L as our representatrve The brg events of our erghth grade were the nrght socrals and the Junror Hrgh carnrval How we worked dec oratrng settrng up booths and prac trcrng for the carnrval Not to be 'left out of thrs hrstory are the sports of our Junror hrgh years There were games rn basketball football baseball and soccer between homeroom teams also the school team Then ame the trme when we left our chrldhood days and entered the grown up realm of hrgh school For seyeral weeks we trptoed fear full: through the halls wanderrng mto the wrong classrooms and won derrng who among these all wrse lc alfulf students were dreaded sen ,rors loud clangrng norses were heard for one solrd week because we had to carry our books rn buck t and an outsrder would prob ably comment on the backward llooknrg freshman because remem b we had to wear our clothes backward Our freshman dramatrc Musrc Box and The Hard Borled Egg Our class offrcers for that year were Ray Harrrs presrdent and Brllre Cassell secretary As sophomores we elected Shrrley Hayden presrdent Albert Wagner vrce presrdent Ila Mae West sec retary and Charlene McBrrde treasurer We were really proud when one of our number was crown ed beauty queen of Sterlrng Hrgh Then we went on to become Jun rors and upper classmen One of our accomplrshments was the Jun ror plays wrth 22 Junrors makrng up the cast Our class offrcers were Loren Paullng presrdent Peggy Rasmussen vrce presrdent Marjo rre Setterberg secretary treasurer Class offrcers for our senror year are as follows President Loren Paulrng vrce presrdent Ila Mae West secretary Marjorre Setter berg and treasurer Peggy Rasmus sen Sponsors are Mrs Margaret Shambaugh Mrss Margaret Pope 'vlrss Frances Smrth and Mr Dan Ckalla assrstrng Not to be forgotten are the pet nrcknames for the drgnrfred sen rors Glorra Fabian was Slurp Duane Dovrrs Wrenre Byron Son 4 4 1 1 1 nenberg was known as Saunch ' Shrrlee Cooper answered to Shul 1 and Drngy Loren Paulrng wrthl the Sterlrng Hr taxr and of course Berky for Joanne Berkstresser I We started the year out rugged wlth the rnrtratron of the freshmen rn two assembly programs After the gruelrng rnrtratron was over al semor freshman party was grven Much new talent was presented rn the semor talent program wrth the theme of four soldrers rn a foxhole at Chrrstmastrme The roles of the soldrers were played by Byron Son nenberg Dale Smrth Larry Werns man and Albert Wagner Lorene Ranum Rrchard Guenzr Peggy, Rasmussen Ila West Charlene Mc Brrde Phyllrs Ness and Rrchard Qrunn performed musrcally and Paulrne Haney portrayed the To kyo Rose So came commencement wrth the senrors grvrng therr pageant Volce of Arnerrca Seniors w1ll look back on therr years together wrth mrn gled happrness and sadness Happr ness for all the fun shared sad I ness because they w1ll be partrng to travel the drfferent paths they have chosen We go hoprng thatl those who wrll follow rn our steps wrll remember us not only as a fun lovrng class but as one who left the rdea of frndrng a trarl or blazrng one 1 Seniors Tutor Tender F rosh Slrppery and Shmy though verse could be heard chanted by the freshmen as they sat on the floor legs crossed and hands movrng back and forth rn an orrerrtal manner Thrs was only a part of the tomary rnrtratron planned by senrors In addrtron to the assembly rnrtratron programs freshmen were requrred to dress rn a certarn vlay The grrls were com pelled to wear therr harr in at least frfteen prgtarls skrrts wrong srde out long black stockrngs therr dads parrrna tons and presumably their rrothers gloves and verls The boys wor shorts srx rnches above the knees turbans earrrngs and brg galoshes All were requrred to car ry therr books rn surtcases Due to the excellent sportsman shrp drsplayed by the freshmen and then wrllrngness to cooperate a us the wo a ber 19 by the senrors RAY HARRIS student body pres rdent of S H S was sworn 1nto the Navy January 10 and left Frrday January 12 for Great Lakes Illr nors where he recerved hrs basrc trarnrng He was one of the f1!'St of thrs years senror class to leave for the servrce Not only has he served as the, student body presrdent and the! presrdent of the student councrl but he served as yrce presrdent of the student body durrng hrs Junror year He helped plan the school socrals durrng hrs sophomore year and he was very actrve rn band and orchestra hrs freshman and sopho more years Ray has been very actrve rn all sports whrch S H S offers durrng the four years of hrs hrgh school lrfe Hrs leadrng sport was foot ban rn vyhrch he has been prckedl twrce for the all conference foot ball team Hes also yery outstand r mg rn track and basketball He was one of the boys who went to the! state basketball tournament rn 1944 ' On March 9 1945 S 2 c Ray Har rrs returned to Sterlrng to spend an erght day leave wrth frrends and relatrves He recently completed hrs boot trarnrng at Great Lakes Trarn mg Center After hrs vrsrt Ray reported back at Great Lakes where he awarted further trarnrng rn a servrce school for avratron ordnance Semors Treat Tuesday evenrng September 19 the senrors entertarned the fresh men rn the old gym from 7 30 p m untrl 9 30 p m Dancrng and a few mrxers were held Suckers were grven to all who consrdered them selr es suckers 1We had Just a few left Hm'Pr Drd you hear about the four Scotchmen who drowned vyhrle smmmrng rn the lock one after noon Each bet a shrllmg that he could stay under the water the longest of the four vsrnner
