was otuzffc Due to the lack of interest shown by other high schools in participating in interschool meets, cross country had a slow season last fall, but good material was developed . . . One meet was attended at the Geneseo track . . . final score: Geneseo 35, Sterling 28, East Moline 48. Squad divided into the varsity team and a second group who also earned credit . . . Varsity squad: William Woodyatt Qcaptaini, Donald Ford, Ray Pettit, Earl Bruggeman, Harold Landis, Clyde Boehm, Harrison Stone, Martin Hurd, and Robert Eeldkirchner . . . Stanley Heller, last year's track star, cross country manager. Coach Small has promised to take his team On longer trips next fall in View of the fact that the team will be much more experienced . . . A meet each week is the dream of Coach Small . . . Team handicapped by the untimely death of Dick Hulse. Cross country is rapidly coming into its own . . . Team undoubtedly got the bad breaks, for Marschang was the only backfield man who returned this year . . . games lost on slim margin. In spite of these handicaps the Sterling gridsters got second place in the North Central Conference . . . In only one game, with DeKalb, was Sterling held scoreless . . . S. H. S. gained thirteen first downs in this game . . . DeKalb, only two. Sterling played its first night game at the Morrison gridiron . . . With a slippery field Sterling came through with only a tie to its credit. Rochelle game was a comedy of fumbles . . . Rochelle obliged more than once but Sterling proved the politer team of the two . . . we had a few more fumbles . . . we lost, 12-T. Dixon provided us with the real heartbrealcer . . . Score was six to nothing in our favor . . However Dixon scored a last minute touchdown, giving us only a tie. 25
