« 7 fe t954 STERLING HIGH SCHOOL Sterling City Texas DedioxticK We dedicate the yearbook to our superintendent, Mr. O.T. Jones. He has been our superintendent since 1935. Besides doing a wonderful job with our school, he has been a loyal and devoted friend to each and every student. In dedicating this book to him. we desire to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. The Senior Class O.T. JONES Superintendent of Schools HARRY C. BRADSTREET Principal of Elementary School GEORGE W. BLACKBURN Principal of High School SWW 7'tcc4te WORTH DURHAM chesley McDonald DAVID GLASS ROBERT FOSTER Do you know the origin of our school song? Many school songs are copied from some other school or college song, but the words of the Sterling school song were composed by a former Sterling High School student. During the school term of 1930-31, Mrs. G.T. Neal, the piano teacher, offered a prize for the best song composed by a student. A senior, Vera Stamps, now Mrs. A.J. Nichols of Battle Creek, Michigan, won the prize with the words you now sing, and set them to a pan of John Philip Sousa’s STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER. We march down the aisle of fame; Eagles of Sterling High is our name. We're lads, lassies young and gay, True and loyal in every way. We offer our tribute and praise, And to our winning high school we raise Our colors of purple and gold. We are for you; we love you too, Dear Sterling High School EARL BLAIR Football 50-53; Football Captain 52; Football Co-Captain 53; Basketball 52-54; Track 52-54; FHA Sweetheart 53; Halloween King 52; Best All-Around Boy 53; Freshman Favorite; Freshman President; Sophomore Secretary; Junior Secretary; Senior President; Hudson-King Award 53; Junior Play; Senior Play. In the year 1942, Miss Bernice Alexander and Mrs. Mary Crossno were our first grade teachers. (Only eight of the original twenty-one are graduating this year.) Duke and Duchess were Billy Joe and Shirley. At the end of school, we had our first school picnic. In the second grade, teachers were Miss Alma Richardson and Miss Lucille Hodges. Dan and Jackie were Duke and Duchess. This year we had a May Day program. Teacher in the third grade, Mrs. Mary Crossno, said we MUST learn our multiplication tables, and WE DID. Duke and Duchess were Dolores and Hal, Jr. The fall of 1945 ushered in the fourth grade. Miss Mary Brammer was our teacher. We learned many interesting things in science. Billy Cain and Jackie were Duke and Duchess. Miss Nettie McMasters was our teacher in the fifth grade. Billy Cain and Betty were Duke and Duchess. The highlight of the year was our first formal dance given at Bill Swann's home, on Valentine's Day. In the sixth grade, Jackie resorted to violence, and as the result, Hal, Jr. received a knot on his head from a baseball bat. Mrs. Imogene Blackburn was our teacher. Bobbie and Gene were Duke and Duchess. Mrs. Bena Davis was our teacher the seventh year; we had a- Texas History Club which we all enjoyed. Shirley and Clinton were the Halloween Duke and Duchess. We gave a Western party for the eighth grade. Earl Blair and Betty Dunn were our Halloween Duke and Duchess, and Walter Duff was our teacher in the eighth grade. This year we all visited the insane asylum at Big Spring. Betty Dunn and Jacque Foster were grade school cheerleaders. Graduation was the highlight of the year with Bill Swann having the highest grade and Betty Dunn and Celia Ruth Hanson the second highest. Our Freshman year is one we will never forget. Especially initiation! Madell Ben-ningfield and Earl Blair were Prince and Princess. Miss Jo Shinn was our sponsor. Sophomore year Burr Reynolds was our sponsor. June and Gene were our Prince and Princess. Remember playing hooky our Junior year and the weeks that followed? Halloween was certainly fun, too! (Will we ever forget Hood and the skunk?) Memories of the Atomic Blonde (Junior Play), linger also. Mr. D.L. Haralson was our sponsor, and Betty and Earl were King and Queen of Halloween. Here we are Seniors, and Mr. Haralson is still our sponsor. Jacque and Don were King and Queen of Halloween. Outstanding events of 1954 are Kid Day, Junior-Senior Day, the Senior Play, House for Sale—Haunted; the trip to Mexico(M.O.P.), and of course, graduation. Time: 1974 Setting: In the future Cast: Senior Class of 1954 FOREWORD This is a drama taken from real-life and meant to portray the circumstances that certain intelligentsia of Sterling High School find themselves in twenty years from that great moment of graduation in 1954. In order to understand this story better, it is necessary to introduce each character of the cast individually. EARL NORMAN BLAIR—One of the younger generals making his mark around the Pentagon. He's made his millions on patents for commercial jet airlines. He is President ex-officio of TWA. PEGGY JEAN BOATLER--Eccentric philanthropist who is chief executive of the NCFOA (National Canine-Feline Orphans' Aid). WILLIAM JOSEPH SWANN--Jr.—A graying, 39-year old, 250-pound executive. Asa top engineer in his field, his main offices are on the top floor of the Pan-American Union Building in Caracas, Venezuela. PATTY JUNE BOATLER--A distinguished novelist whose name is under consideration for the Pulitzer Prize. She is often seen dashing around New York City in the favorite of her six Cadillacs, a pink convertible. JOHN HAMILTON—Hon—Head coach of basketball at Baylor University. He is also doctor of philosophy. SHIRLEY MITCHEL—Wife of Admiral Loy Mitchell and mother of four daughters. DON MARTIN—A prosperous rancher and hog raiser on 2,000 acres in Arkansas. CLARA TINDALL—The foremost income tax computer in the U.S.A. She has a system which completely reverses the present tax system—the government pays the peoplel DELMAR RADDE—Retired rancher—owner of ten times world champion bull—a jer-brangusteen. CELIA RUTH HANSON--Head nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Recently awarded a medal for curing a person of the hiccups which had lasted for three months. JOYCE DEW—Chief advertising executive for Louisiana Hayride and an important figure in the government of Louisiana.
