CLASS PROPHECY On May 21, 1971, just twenty years after graduation of the class of 1951, a committee was asked to make a survey of the class. The following summary was compiled from information obtained from ques-tionaires sent to all members of the graduating class of Sterling High School of 1951; ALVIN MOORE, is working on a project to light up the moon for all lovers four weeks a month instead of one. This will mean a substantial increase in his fabulous business-Moore's Moonlight Serenade Ser- vice. HENRY BLIZNAK has just returned from a tour of all ranches in the United States. He has been appointed to present a petition from his plaintiffs in their plea to the government asking for a larger allotment of rain for next year's grasslands. Incidentally, Henry, the richest rancher in Texas, has been •labeled the Catch of the Year . DARLENE McENTIRE has gained international fame with her lecture on a current problem, Why Every Girl Should Be Married . She has been chosen by the M. O. M. Society (Millionaire Old Maids) to appear in Congress and introduce a bill To insure a husband to every 25-year-old woman in Texas . ELROY BUTLER'S new novel, The Sixth Down on the Ten Yard Line is now to be made into a movie. This novel, voted as a best seller last year, describes many unusual techniques of the game, such as quarterbacking by telephone. And before I forget, Elroy plays the leading role in the movie. Dr. HARRY BLANEKhas become a well-known physician in Wrest Texas after thirteen long years spent in intensive study. His many patients have made him a wealthy man. A recent financial investment is the purchasing of a controlling interest in West Texas' largest funeral home, operated by his old friend, LOY MITCHEL. Loy, known as the friendly undertaker, has been complaining, however, because Dr. Blanek keeps him so busy covering up his mistakes. This doesn't leave Loy much time to play and sing western ballads. BARBARA GARRETT, voted the Best Dressed Woman of 1965 , has recently been seen sneaking around in blue jeans and a T shirt.--Could it be that old love for West Texas coming back after all these years spent in Washington? PASCAL BROWN has set a new world's record for flagpole sitting at 260 days. His devoted wife, Darlene, has been delivering his meals on time every day, and the Society for Wives of Flagpole Sitters has voted her as the Number One Lady for the Year . Pascal has plans for coming back down to earth again soon. ELIZABETH HILDEBRAND, who has served for many years on the faculty of Stephens College, has been named to fill the vacancy by the retirement of Emily Post. Elizabeth promises us that many changes will be made. We're anxiously awaiting her newest publication, Cowboy Etiquette . SUE LOWE is a firm believer in the statement, Old Square Dancers never die----they're just carried off . However, age has made it necessary for the do-si-do lady to give up her much-loved hobby, and she is now proving herself to be a good neighbor by teaching all the kids in the neighborhood how to march. Could any of this talent be attributed to the Pep Squad of SHS? WILLIAM BLAIR is proving to be quite a strain on the nerves of the public with his many hot rod jobs. One never knows what the cloud of dust in the road might bring forth under his direction. MELLVIN1A HUFF has gone to France to study the Frenchmen—er, I mean, to study the newest in French hat designs. Could be that the first statement was more truthful. After raising 15 champion lambs, CLINTON HODGES has decided to give the other boys a chance. Clinton is widely known throughout all sheep and goat raisers associations for his many accomplishments in the field of Improved Sheep for Depleted Grasslands . The Clinton Hodges cup is now the top honor in the Sterling County Stock Show. MARIAN O'DELL has returned to her old home town of Grandfalls to teach Girls' Physical Education. She is also sponsor of the Pep Squad. Could this be where the Cowboys got some inside info about the Sterling Eagles? LEROY BUTLER is still in South Africa selling Buicks to the natives. The sale of a car also includes a course in Safe Driving in Ten Easy Lessons taught by Mr. Butler. He certainly has a nice bank account to come home to---just a tip for any interested girls. DON GANN, who spends most of his time doodling on his 14-foot mahogony desk, has been named to a top position in a contest, How to Pick a Secretary . Judging from the 20 beauties he employs, this honor has not been misplaced. What a lucky guy Don turned out to be. And last, the sponsors of the class, MR. and MRS. TILLERSON are still trying to help the Senior Classes make money. CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of I950-'51, being of strong mind and body do hereby bequeath and relinquish our dearest possessions and privileges. To the teachers we leave the happy thoughts that they will again be supreme rulers of their classes until they get another group as ambitious as the Seniors of 1950- 51. To the Juniors, we leave the title SENIORS and our thanks for a wonderful Junior and Senior Day. To the Sophomores we leave all the happy memories of our past school years to do with as they please. To the Freshmen, we leave the reminiscence of a wonderful initiation day and the hope that you will have as many fond memories to carry away after four (or maybe more) years in Sterling High School as we now have. To all the students that will some day become Seniors we leave the challenge for them to live up to the standards and high goals we have striven toward. DON GANN wills his school hat (droopy brim included) to O. F. Carper. With good care, O. F., this will make you appear much brighter throughout your next school year. ALVIN MOORE wills his wonderful physique and his way with the girls to Joe Mullins. Be very careful with this most prized possession, Joe. ELIZABETH HILDEBRAND leaves her natural talent to grow tall to Patsy Davis. Do not overexercise this right, however. ELROY BUTLER bequeaths to Billy Joe Swann his ability to grow a beard. This always makes one appear more manly. WILLIAM BLAIR wills his ability to play football to Bobby Blair--with the express desire that Bobby will pass the same on to another Blair. This heirloom must remain in the family. HARRY BLANEK leaves his much used water gun (used once too often) to Garland Cates. Caution: beware of Galveston. PASCAL BROWN wills his speed on the gridiron to Hal Knight, Jr. This should give you a cinch for a place in the starting line-up, Hal, Jr. MELLVINIA HUFF wills her basketball ability to Ginger Lane. You'll be a star some day, Ginger. SUE LOWE wills her popularity to Mary Davis. This should make Mary Super XX. CLINTON HODGES leaves his girl friend from the Freshman Class to most any Freshman that wants her. But, remember, Hodges will not be too far away. BARBARA GARRETT bequeaths her line of sweet talk to Charlene Drennan. Sometimes this does get one into trouble, however. HENRY BLIZNAK wills his ability to compose and sing love songs to his partner, Larry Glass. You're on your own now, Larry. MARIAN O'DELL bequeaths her ability to remain quiet through a Study Hall to Charlotte Berry. Do not abuse this, Charlotte! LEROY BUTLER leaves his draft status to Hollis Kennemer. One more classification wouldn't matter anyway, Hollis. DARLENE McENTIRE leaves her way with the Army to Janey Brafford. Darlene plans to be an Old Maid, anyway. LOY MITCHEL wills his ability to get along with teachers to Tommy Cole, with the hope that the improvement will be as great with Tommy as it was with Loy. SEASON'S After spending one week in Football Camp on the Nick Reed Ranch, the Eagles were welcomed home by a supper given by the local Lions' Club. The boost from these men enabled the Warbirds to open the 1950 season with a determination to defend their 1949 District VIII title. On Friday, September 15, the Sterling Six routed the Courtney Eagles by a score of 54 to 0. Leroy Butler led the scoring by sprinting for three touchdowns and passing for two more and making one extra point. Pascal Brown was also outstanding, catching two touchdoWn passes. The Butler Twins could not be stopped the next week when the Christoval Cougars invaded the Eagle's nest on September 23. The local sextet won 25 to 0, with Bliznak and Charlie Davis figuring in the scoring. OnSeptember 30, the Eagles took to the road to play the highly Respected Mertzon Hornets in what was their best football performance of the year. Don Gann passed for four touchdowns and the purple and gold led by 27 to 0 at half time. Sterling came back the second half and made five tallies with four of them called back, due to penalties. William Blair was the Eagle mainstay on defense. Backed by the fine spirit of the Sterling football fans, the District leaders journeyed to Forsan to break an old tradition--the Buffaloes had not lost a game On their home field for eight years. From the beginning it looked as though the Eagles would have lijtle trouble as Henry Bliznak ran 60 yards for a touchdown on the first play. The play was called back and on the very next play, Leroy passed to Elroy for a score. Bliznak repeated his 60 yard run again in the second quarter and Sterling led 12 to 6 at half time. In the third quarter the Buffaloes scored a safety and a touchdown to lead 15 to 12. Bliznak opened the final quarter with some tremendous drives to score the third TD. Leroy Butler iced the game for the Warbirds in the last four minutes with a trek from the 10-yard line, and the game ended 24 to 15. And on October 16, Forsan was defeated on its field! ! A week later, October 20, the Water Valley Wildcats were our visitors. The Eagles coasted to victory as seven players took part in the scoring. Charlie D is and Leroy Butler led the parade. T Formation Our Favorite Play RECORD The Eagles took the next week easy by taking a licking from the Grandfalls Cowboys. It was a close game until the loss of the services of Bliznak and William Blair by the injury route. The score, 25 to 7. November 3 Elroy Butler sparked the Eagles to victory over the Paint Rock Indians, though he never played. An injury in workout caused Elroy to be hospitalized. During the game he inspired his team mates by a telephone set-up sponsored by his class, the 1951 Seniors. Leroy Butler and Don Gann carried the brunt of the attack. Bobby Blair, Garland Cates, and Charlie Davis plugged the holes left by the injured E. Butler, W. Blair, and Bliznak. Larry Glass was the outstanding defensive man and the Eagles won 27-14. On November 10 the local merchants closed their doors at 5:30 to journey to Rankin for the all-important game. Near blizzard conditions caused the Eagles to warm up slowly and found themselves behind at half-time, 15 to 0. The Sterling lads fought back the second half and Leroy Butler scored their first tally in the opening minutes of the final quarter. Some five minutes later, Henry Bliznak drove over the 5 yard line. A play that will long be remembered by the Eagles was a pass from Don Gann to Charlie Davis for 60 yards, falling short of a touchdown by 6 yards. With seven seconds remaining, the Eagles tried tQ drive over and the ball was dead on the 3 yard line as the final gun sounded. This left the Eagles in a tie with the Red Devils for District Championship. The next week the Sterling lads of the gridiron breathed an easy victory over the Garden City Bearcats, 38 to 12, to bring District VIII's 1950 season to a close, with the Sterling City Eagles and the Rankin Red Devils tied for the Championship. Immediately following the final game, the coaches and captains of the title-sharing teams met to determine the lucky six to represent the district in a bi-district tilt. It seemed as if Lady Luck was not with us as Rankin won the toss of the coin, and with it the right to a Regional Championship. WILLIAM BLAIR CAPTAINS DON GANN Two year letterman Center. Hard charging defensive man as well as a good blocker. Tore up the middle of each opposing team’s line. Four year letterman Outstanding T man, good faker, and hard tackier, Don always played a great game. LEROY BUTLER Four year letterman Leroy was an outstanding defensive line backer as well as unanimous all-district choice this year. He was chosen to represent District VIII in the All-State game at San Marcos. High scorer on the team this season. ELROY BUTLER Four year letterman Elroy could snag passes above his head or around his shoe strings. Good defensive end, hard worker, and a good blocker. Selected as end on alldistrict second team. PASCAL BROWN Four year letterman One of the smallest men on the starting team. His hustle and spirit made up for his lack of size. Excellent pass snatcher and carried many over for touchdowns. HENRY BLIZNAK Three year letterman Buzz was a hard driving right halfback who often bullied his way for extra yardage. His good punts often brought the Eagles out of bad territory. He was 1949 all-district back. w m LARRY GLASS Three year letterman Hard charging defensive end. His general football knowledge was a great help to the team. He will be depended upon in the coming season. HOLLIS KENNEMER Two year letterman Hard charging center. Rugged tackier that caused many backs not to come his way. GARLAND CATES Two year letterman Good defensive end. Swarmed any back that came his way. With another year to play he should do great things in the Eagle line-up. felLL COLE Two year letterman Good defensive back. Ran well in several games. CHARLIE DAVIS Two year letterman A fast hard driving back this year. Saw much action and should be the starting halfback next season. BOBBY BLAIR Two year letterman Bobby was unmovable from the defensive center position. He opened the way for many games Should be a big threat for the 1951 season. FRESHMAN SQUAD These boys showed good hustle and kept team spirit high. They worked hard every day, saw much action, and proved they will be hard to handle next year. EARL BLAIR DAN GLASS HAL KNIGHT, JR. GENE SMITH GEORGE BLACKBURN, more commonly known as Prof , served as Chief Scout and probably saw more games of other District teams than of the Eagles. His good scouting notes helped to arrange the work for the next week. G. W. TILLERSON directed the Eagles to a third District Championship in the past four years. As Coach, he molded the Eagles into good sports and stimulated outstanding team spirit in both players and fans. JOHNNIE OZEE, newcomer to the Eagle coaching staff, served as trainer, scout, and all-around utility man. His job with the Eaglets will pay great dividends in the future. ■ Always hungry Leisure time Chow line! Big loafers Beat the Exes Speech! Speech! SUE LOWE MARY DAVIS SEASON'S RECORD KAY McENTIRE For the'first time in the history of girls' basketball in Sterling City, the Eagle Lassies won the District Championship. It was one of the closest races ever held within a district. Out of six games played, there were only two points difference in final score of five of those games. Sterling scored victories over Mert-zon, 16-14 and 13-11, losing to them by 23-22. They won over Water Valley 19-18, 23-21, and 33-19; thereby winning the West-half of the District. In the play-off with Robert Lee, Sterling lost the first game at home 25-24 in an overtine. The Sterling girls came back to win the second game at Robert Lee 25-15. In the final contest at Robert Lee, the Sterling six won 13-9 to win their first District Championship. Some twenty fans showed their appreciation by donating generously to a fund for Coach Tillerson and his fifteen players to go to Regional Meet at Brownwood on March 2. More than one-hundred fans followed the club to watch them play Hawley. The Sterling girls lost to a very strong Hawley club that later won second place in the Region. During the season the girls entered tournaments at Lake View, Sterling, and Robert Lee. The Championship Trophy in the Robert Lee Tournament was brought home by the local lassies. The fine play, good sportsmanship, and splendid team backing made the 1951 season one to be remembered. ELIZABETH HILDEBRAND Two on Three ! CHARLENE DRENNAN TOP ROW: Berry, Brafford, Dunn, B.
