Miller Professor of English Yale University Hartford, Connecticut Dear Mr. Miller: May 23, 1965 In your letter you asked if I knew the whereabouts of our class of '50. All have climbed the ladder of success and fame, and I am very proud that I was a teacher of that class. I have saved the clippings concerning all of our class in the recent years, and I am sending you the following: WELD KNOWN ROPER RETIRES Dec. 21, 1964 - Everyone remembers Billy Bynum who defeated Toots Mansfield for the title of Champion Calf Roper of the World. He and his wife are going to live on their ranch and give up rodeos. Their ranch is near Ft. Worth, Texas. Bynum says he will continue roping for the sport, but not for a living anymore. TOURING THE WORLD April 2, I960 - Miss Joan King, the famous Parisian model, is now on tour of the world. Miss King was a small town girl before a talent scout found her in San Angelo, Texas. Following her tour she and her husband will take their annual six months trip to South America. SELLS HORSE FOR $2, 000, 000 Feb. 16, 1961 - Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mitchell who have the largest ranch in Texas have sold their prize horse for $2, 000, 000. This tops all prices ever paid for one horse. Mrs. Jack Mitchell, the former Norma Huff or Sterling City, said she surely hated to sell Golddust even for such a fabulous price. FAMOUS DANCER AT HOME Nov. 11, I960 - Miss Helen Lawson, the famed girl of society because of her dancing, is now visiting her parents in Sterling City. She gave a little informal tea for ail her friends. About 600 guests called at the Lawson Mansion. This was the most charming social event of the year. WELL KNOWN FARMER AND RANCHMAN GIVES LAND FOR IMPROVEMENT OF WESTERN AGRICULTURE July 7, 1963 - We have today received information that the wealthy scientific farmer and Stockman, Duard Grosshans, has given to Sterling County 500 acres of fine irrigated land to be used for an experiment farm for the development of western agriculture. Mr. Grosshans is a former president ofthe TAFTBOAATLITWUS (The Association for the Betterment of Agricultural and Ranch Land in the Western United States). TRIP TO ENGLAND Jan. 5, 1960 - Miss La Verne King, the director of Home Economics at Vassar, will leave on a trip to England to purchase a chocolate cake recipe from Queen Mary. When she returns, La Verne will take Betty Crocker's place. NEW YORK PLAYBOY IN TEXAS July 3, 1962 - Jimmy Lindsey, the famous New York playboy, is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lindsey in Sterling City, Texas. There are rumors that Mr. Lindsey may be thinking of matrimony. Could it be that his attentions are on the famous movie star, Margaret O’Brien? OPERA STAR ON TOUR August 30, 1960 - The famous Metropolitan Opera star, Richard Foster, is now on tour of the United States and Europe. Critics claim he is much better than Caruso. Mr. Foster and his wife will take vacation after the tour is finished. His latest record is the Laughing Polka . ON BUYING TRIP TO NEW YORK June 1, 1961 - The former Miss Fern Garrett is on a buying trip to New York for her husband's elaborate store in Sterling City. Their store is the largest and finest store in Texas. It is better than Joske's and Neiman Marcus. In July, Fern's husband will meet her in New York and they will take atrip to Europe. I hope that this will supply you with the information you desired. Congratulations on your present position at Yale. It has seemed a long time since you were a member of the faculty at Sterling City.
