Published By The Annual Staff STERLING CITY HIGH SCHOOL Sterling City, Texas 1948 -- 1949 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Junior High Elementary F avo rites Sports O r ganizations Advertisers DEDICATION We, the 1949 annual staff, dedicate this yearbook to our sponsor, Mrs. G. W. Tillerson. She has sponsored our annuals for the past three years. Without her untiring efforts and genuine interest, it would have been impossible to have preserved our school-day memories in the form of our annuals. In dedicating this book to her, we desire to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right: KNIGHT, DAVIS, REED, DEAL, FOSTER, JONES, KING, EMERY H. M. MY MEMOIRS We have twenty-two pupils in the first grade. We like to go to school, and are working hard. The only trouble we have had is over names. We have three Donalds, two Wandas and two Helens in our room. Well, here it is May first, and we are all looking forward to our May Day Festival tonight. The boys will be dressed as Sunbeams, and the girls will perform the duties of flower girls. I might mention here that our first grade teacher is Miss Eloise Nelson, and our princess for the Halloween Carnival was Trinabeth Reed and her escort was 'Don House. I’ll close this year with going on our first school picnic. Boy! did we have fun. Our second grade teacher is Mrs. W. S. Nelson. Our class has decreased some, but not enough to hurt, yet. This year we shared our picnic with the first grade on May 10. We had a lot more fun because there were more of us. Here we are in the third grade. There are eighteen of us now and we have had two teachers, Miss Ida Mae Roberts and Mrs. Emery. What do you know—we skipped a grade and are feeling quite smart as fifth graders. Our class is still decreasing with only twelve in it, now. Miss Rena Ball is our teacher. Now we are in Junior High and really feeling smart. Our sixth grade teacher was Miss Flo Allen, our seventh grade teacher was Mrs. T. C. Davis, and our eighth grade teacher was Miss Ball again. Graduation was very exciting. Honor students were Dick Bailey, valedictorian and Margaret Ritter, salutatorian. What do you know? We are freshmen, and Oh Brother! we’ve got everything that goes with it including plenty of beatings. Miss Mildred Atkinson is our sponsor. The year has passed like wild fire. Now, we find ourselves sophomores with quite a large class. Mr. Herman Carter was our sponsor this year. Our being in high school really does take on light now that we are full fledged juniors. This year we have for our sponsor, Miss Evelyn Vernon. Our play is entitled Take It Easy . As customary we entertained the seniors on Junior-Senior Day. We went to San Angelo, went swimming, bowling, had dinner at Steve’s, went skating, and then went to the show. It won’t be long now before we are Seniors as we realize that our rings are already here to be presented to us on the night of graduation. Our officers are Margaret, President; Blaine, Vice-president; Trinabeth, Secretary, Dick, Treasurer. The long awaited year has finally arrived. WE ARE SENIORS. At the time of this publication we are in the midst of selecting our play, planning our trip and raising money for it. There are only six of us now; R. B. left at mid-term. These six include four that started together in the first grade. They are Margaret, Trinabeth, Buddy and Dick; others are Harold and Blaine. No matter what the hardships, school has really been grand. CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1949 of Sterling High School being of sound mind and reasonably good judgement do hereby make, execute, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament, revoking any and all wills made colfectively including any and all promises which may com-flict with this document, including individual promises. To the Seniors of ’50 we leave our home room with the expressed hopes of Mr. Ratliff that you will keep it looking better than we did. To the Class of ’51, now sophomores, we bequeath our differences in opinion, with the hope that your twenty members may learn to think as one. To the Class of ’52, fish to you, we leave our dignity and sophistication. To Richard Foster, Harold Baker leaveshis ability to sing. With a voice like yours, Richard, you need something. Blaine Mitchel leaves to Richard Willis his ability to punch cows rather than punching some poor boy’s nose. Margaret wills her ability to keep quiet in class to Billy Ralph Bynum, even though a muffler would work better. Trinabeth Reed wills her peroxide formula to Joan King. Dick Bailey leaves his ability to accomplish great grades to Elroy Butler in hope that Elroy will get out of school before he is forty. Buddy Cole wills his poetic ability of praising girl’s beauty to Harry Blanek, who is in need of something besides a model A. We hereby appoint the President of the Senior Class of 1950 sole executor of this our last will and testament. SIGNED, SENIOR CLASS OF 1949 CLASS PROPHECY The moment is tense. Not a person is stirring. The Senior Class of ’49 are gathered around the crystal ball of Swammee anxiously awaiting the message from the far away spirit. The purpose of this horseplay is to see what each of the seniors will be doing at this same time in 1959. The contact is ready. Wait------ Who do you suppose is the first one to appear? Why it’s Margaret Ritter. What is that funny thing she is holding in her hand? It’s a flask and test tube. You didn’t know it, but Margaret is planning to become a famous scientist and this proves her expectations------she is one. Our next image is Trinabeth Reed. What is that freakish looking garb she has on? Well, you couldn’t expect anything better because you see she is wearing the latest thing designed for interior decorators. Some class. And here’s Harold Baker. I have heard that his cowboy band is just out of this world In fact it has been rumored that he is giving Eddie Arnold a run for his money. Who would have ever thought of Blaine Mitchel becoming a famous agriculturist. They say his cross between the strawberry plant and the wheat plant has resulted in the most unique type of breakfast cereal. Buddy Cole steps into the spotlight. You know he has become a well-known minister and they even say that he will some day be another Billy Sunday. We see Dick Bailey sitting at a desk with his feet propped up, smoking a cigar, watching his secretary type his letters. We understand he is now quite rich from his investments made with embezzled funds of the Senior Class of 1949. And now the crystal ball of Swammee is no longer clear, but we part, much happier about the future of our dear class.
