VVILLARU KIQITI1 returned to the Atlantic in time to participate in the Cuban quarantine declared by President Kennedy. Captain Tyler was commended during these operations for leadership and effectiveness in enforce- ment of the quarantine. His next duty assignment was Chief Staff Officer to Commander Amphibious Squadron Two. The Squadron was employed primarily in the Caribbean as the Ready Amphibious Force, but the highlight of the tour was Exercise STEELPIKE where the Second Marine Air Ground Task Force was landed in Huelva, Spain. Captain Tyler was deeply involved in planning and executing this exercise. Upon completion of STEIi1,P1KIi he took command of USS MOUNT BAKER in the Pacific where his responsibility included shipment of urgent munitions to U. S. Forces in Vietnam. In March 1966, Captain Tyler was assigned as Chief of the Navy Section, Military Advisory Assistance Group, Teheran, Iran. During this tour he traveled extensively in the Middle East from the Khyber Pass to Addis Ababa. 1n Iran Captain Tyler was employed as an advisor on a national as well as service level. Upon detachment he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the President of the United States for his exceptionally valuable service. Captain Tyler relieved as Commanding Officer, USS STERETT, on station in the Gulf of Tonkin on 29 November 1969. Since that time STICRISTT has spent 117 days on the Gulf of Tonkin Strike Support Ship Station, 91 days on PIRAZ Station, and 69 days on the Sea of Japan l'ARl'RU Station. During this tour STER1i'1 1' also participated in the lift-121 SAR effort.
