.1 N thetime of William Shakespeare education was not the common thing it is now,' rather it was an uncom- mon thing. Most boys and girls grew to be men and women without knowing how to read and write. At that time girls worked with their mothers and in this way learned to keep house which was the only thing they thought necessary for them to know. Many boys were apprenticed to learn some trade. Usually the master not only taught the boy his trade but provided him with food and clothing such as it was, the boy paid for these by working hard for the master. If a boy were fortunate enough to go to school he learned to read, write, and cipher and sometimes he studied Latin and Greek. Very few were the boys who entered the colleges of either Cambridge or Oxford. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare attended the Free Grammar School of Stratford-on-Avon, which is yet standing, where he probably studied the three R's and a bit of Latin and Greek. When his son was fourteen years old, John Shakespeare, because his business ventures had failed, was forced to take him out of school. Immediately he apprenticed the boy to learn a trade. During Sh.akespeare's life time the English language was undergoing a change for many Latin words were being intro- duced and combined with the old Saxon words. In his writ- ings Shakespeare himself drew on both languages. Like most people of his time he spelled as he pleased: at that time only compositors spelled to at system, and then in order to save time.
