PRE IDE T ln this, my third year at Stephens College, I am caught up in the excitement, the challenge, of working together with faculty, students and other administrators to implement the mission of the College adopted a year ago. ln accordance with that mission, we seek always for our students the high quality of liberal and specialized education for women which is a Stephens' hallmark, an environment which encourages self-discovery and self-fulfillment, and the development of a sense of responsibility to others. With confidence and optimism we are addressing the problems confronting all colleges and universities by carrying out a four-year plan which was presented to the College community last year - a plan which has as its goal the continuing realization of the CoIIege's mission. The students have evidenced their dedication to Stephens with participation in discussions and on committees and boards, providing valuable input which has influenced decisions concerning College directions. They broke records and rendered my financial situation precarious, when 85 percent of the student body took part in the Dollar-for-Dollar, Make CJ Holler student campaign for funds. They made an unprecedented contribution to the College which I matched as promised. The students' scholarly achievements, personal growth and responsible commitment to the College community are affirmation of the rightness of the mission which directs our efforts. The destiny of a college resides at all times in its students and alumnae who, through their life choices, reflect credit, not only upon themselves, but upon their teachers and the college itself. 1 If RLAND F. A. Robert Funk B. Betty Littleton Dean Funk's resignation in the fall meant for me an abrupt change of responsibilities, an expansion of duties and, of course, a speeding-up of the daily pace of my life. Fletrenchment plans, committee meetings, memos and memoranda, budget difficulties, complaints -these have been balanced by the good in those things that have brought us together. I have seen this year a number of young women in the process of discovering that they could learn and do and be more than they had imagined. l have seen them face frustration and disappointment and some failure with humor and grace. I have seen thern deal reasonably, sensibly, with disagreement and differences of opinion that threatened to erupt into irreconcilable conflict. ln short, l have seen them re-affirm what education - and this college - are all about. On the balance, this has been a good year. X .- ns. .' ' fr Q.. mmf., . A X Q ,f get gt . .a.gf31.t '1 i ' ' . 'Q A-xkqil-L1 , . X' , . -5 ty. 3-t'3faiH5ir4,'.
