One, being able to entertain an idea, two, being able to entertain another persong three, being able to entertain yourself. If you can entertain an idea you are in pursuit of truth. If you are capable of entertaining another person you are in pursuit of goodness, and if you can entertain yourself, you are in pursuit of beauty. This anecdote illustrates the objectives of the Humanities Division. More than any subject offered to Stephens girls, Humanities applies to actual living-to every song they hear, every painting they see, every book they read. Tl1ey meet it day after day because the course deals with being rather than doing. They are not taught how to write a book, compose a song, or paint a picture, but rather how to understand and appreciate work such as this that others have done. Miss Louise Dudley, formerly dean here at Stephens, and now head of the Humanities Division and co-author of the textbook used in the Humanities courses, is a charming person who is a constant source of inspiration to students through her own appreciation of beauty both in the arts and in everyday life. Because of the many different creeds and points of view which are found in any large group, the topic of religion, althougl1 essentially one of the arts, is not dealt with in the course. However, the truths, the goodness, the beauties of life will remain everlasting assets to girls who have learned to appreciate the humanities. JAMES ADAIR Miss MAUDE ADAMS Da. LOUISE DUDLEY
