As one means of promoting growth, the Extra-Class Division has been organized as one of the eight major divisions of the College. Dr. Merle Prunty, head of the division, believes that out-of-class activities allford and encourage practice in the relinement of social behavior and group living, that tl1e college setting is a normal, natural com- munity, in which the desires and efforts of students to organize and maintain a co-operative, controlled, and democratic college group life can be realized. In order to put this philosophy into pracl.ice, it is the policy of the College to assign students as much direct responsibility as possible for the determination, development, and administration of the campus life. Many students can obtain necessary self-development experiences if responsibilities and opportunities are Wide-spread over the student body. Each girl, there- fore, may hold only one elective oflice. The aim of the College in building an adequate extra- class program is three-fold. In an elfort to meet the present and future leisure-time needs of the girls, clubs, hobby groups, honorary sororities, sports and cultural programs are maintained. Through the student govern- ment and a favorable social and physical setting, a normal community environment is provided for the develop- ment and practice of desirable habits and abilities. Students are also offered personal help in meeting their individual problems. The student administration of Stephens College is carried on by the Civic Association, in which all the H' ev 1 if nf' .Ji Page Z1 l Da. MERLE PRUNTY students automatically become members upon enroll- ment in the College. All organizations of the school are directly connected with Civic Association through- one of its eight major sections: Administrative Division, Campus Service Division, Pan-Hellenic Division, Stu- dent Activity Division, Division of Publications, Stu- dent Congress, and Division of Classes. Through magazines, feature articles, in newspapers, radio broadcasts and occasional movies, Stephens' progressive ideas are conveyed to educators and prospective students. Under the direction of Mr. Barry Holloway, head of the division, Miss Finlay handles radio publicity and transportation, which includes the transference of girls from their homes to the College and back again. Miss Bartlett has charge of all newspaper and magazine work, while Miss Jeri Boyes serves in the dual position of feature writer and picture editor. Mr. Mangan does staff photography for all publicity pictures and shots for the Stephens Standard, the campus magazine. The Division of Public Relations brings to Stephens outstanding writers in the newspaper and magazine LoN Azvncic Miss Juni BOYES 'f if P iiin 'ii field, this enables these guests to learn about the College and give advice to students interested in the different phases of journalism. Wheii a Writer comes to the campus, he comes to learn what Stephens is doing, and is entertained by the Board of Publications. Thus the girls themselves describe what the College is accomplish- ing. Mr. Holloway states that his Division never tells a writer what to say. The Public Relations staff answers hundreds of inquiries from newspapers concerning the activities of students from their local towns. It also corresponds regularly with nearly 700 newspaper writers, magazine writers, newsreel and radio men, concerning current activities functioning at the College. Featured this year in publications from coast to coast were articles on the Forum, The American Woman and Her Re- sponsibilities, the Physical Fitness program spon- sored by the Physical Education Department, and the defense classes organized for the Red Cross and other defense activities. if .M 1 vi ' ati Hfmvm' S. NVA1,'1'En Harvey S. Walter, Director of Admissions, heads the group of sixteen men who counsel prospective Stephens students in the girls' own homes. These men, who cover the forty-eight states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Canada, promote the interests of the College and main- tain a harmonious contact between the College and the families of the students. Because of the rapid growth of the College, the need of such a service has been felt both by parents of students and by the administration. Admissions counselors are therefore carefully selected for their interest and experience in the problems of education. The individual guidance of the student and the evaluation of her proposed course, both for vocational training and for transfer to other colleges and universities, are typical problems skillfully handled by the Stephens College field men. The original staff for the year 1941-42 numbered eighteen. Robert T. Harrell, who was inducted by the army, and Robert D. Amaden have left. The following sixteen men are carrying on the admissions work in the indicated territories: William A. Baker, Ohio and West Pennsylvania, George W. Bal tzer, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Southern Indiana, Robert Bird, the Southwest, L. W. Bowman, lllinois, except Chicago, Clum Bucher, Missouri and Kansas, William David Carr, North Caro- line, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D. C., Delaware, Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania, Raymond Dooley, Eastern New York, New Jersey and New England, Roy T. Gallemore, Southern states, Machin Gardner, the North- west, including Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Northern California, J. Scott Hemry, Chicago area and Western New York, Lowell Hildebrand, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin, John B. Kyd, Okla- homa, Louisiana and Arkansas, Lynn A. Phillips, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska, Vernon M. VVilliams, Texas, Harvey S. Walter, Florida. Prior to the war, Mr. Bird went to Hawaii and Mr. Walter traveled in Puerto Rico and Cuba. Mr. Gardner covered British Colombia and Mr. Dooley went to Eastern Canada. South Amer- ica and Mexico were contacted through corre- spondence. Page 22
