IRROR CLASS OF 1942 lll66I'l63llillg and Girls' Basketball Although limited, the sports activities for fls have proved quite successful this year, The cheerleading squad, coached by Mr. E. Gordos, did much to promote enthusiasm at th football and basketball tournaments and ld several outdoor pep meetings. Freshman ere also given an opportunity to cheer this ar during home football games and home V vee basketball games. The regular squad, consisting of four soph- omores, three juniors, and two seniors, alter- nated rides on the bus to away games. The senior cheerleaders were Lois Anthony Y who served as cheerleading captain, and Ann Hartford, the assistant captain. Though the scheduled games for the Pal- merton girls' basketball team were few, the P. H. MIRROR CLASS OF 19- Palmerton Higlfs Basketball Team Although none ot' the boys on this year's team was material f'rom last year's first five, the Palmerton high basketball team, coached by Mr. W. 1-1. Wilhelm, won 12 ofthe 21 games they played. Losing but 5 of 14 games the Blue Bombers chalked up a total of 575 points in league com- petition to their opponents' 461. At the season's close the players voted Charles Treskot, a forward, the most valuable player to the team and he was awarded a trophy donated by Costenbader's Drug Store. This was the first year Charles played var- sity ball and the first year the trophy was given. Captaincd by Milan Brestovansky, the Bombers started their season by beating East Mauch Chunk and Wilson Boro by scores of 31-15 and 27-26 respectively in non-league games. Then misfortune stepped in and Palmerton lost three successive non-league games to Summit Hill 34-24, Bethlehem 33-24, and Summit Hill again 37-23. Recovering themselves they prevailed over Easton 28-21 and were then nosed out by the Alumni 27-25. in a game which ended the Bombers' non-league games for the season. Palmerton f'ans received a shock, when in their first league game of' the season, the Blue-and-White five dropped a 43-37 decision to Whitehall. However. they then accounted for three straight victories by overcoming Slatington 34-33, Stroudsburg 38-25, and Le- higliton 66-29. After Lehighton the Bombers met wh proved to be the first half as well as leagi champs, when they met Catasauqua and we defeated by a 58-39 score. Palmerton ended its first half by beati Northampton 38-23 and Emmaus 35-33 whit! gave them 5 victories and 2 losses. N The P. H. S. quintet opened the secol half by revenging its earlier defeat, trouncii Whitehall 51-345 however, they then lost, Slatington for the first time in 13 years by 32-31 score. l Stroudsburg and Lehighton were next sul dueci by the Bombers in a 30-29 and a 58-I game respectively. Again Catasauqua be Palmerton, but this time by a closer scor 34-31. Palmerton's second half was then ended l a loss to Northampton 34-35, and a win ov Emmaus 53-28. The last half' ended in a tie between Sla ington and Catasauqua t'or first place whit Catty easily took in a league playoff. Th left C-itasauqua the 1941342 champions of tl Lehigh Valley League. lt is interesting to note that Palmerton plaj ed 4 league games in which the Final outcon was determined by 1 point, 1 game in whim a field goal was the winning margin, and game in which the result was decided by thri points.
