CONSTRUCTION The university, which began with only one building, now fills 400 acres, part of the origi- nal homestead of Thomas J. Rusk. The univer- sity also maintains a 280-acre beef farm, a 200- acre dairy farm, and an experimental forest in southwest Nacogdoches County. With 23 major instructional buildings and 19 dormitories, SFA offers 13 baccalaureate degrees. Graduate study in the arts, business, education, the humanities and sciences, and forestry is encouraged; and the university stresses broad requirements in literature, sci- ence and the social sciences for its degrees. But Nacogdoches and SFA are more than cold figures and statistics. They are intert- wined parts of each other, each coloring the other in many ways. Nacogdoches is North Street and stately gingerbread houses. It is narrow, winding brick streets and a town where salespeople still say thank you and comment on the weather. What then, is SFA? It is an assortment of buildings, each reflecting different eras and tastes. It is a place where you wear your worst pair of jeans or your best pair to class and no one cares. It is an air of country and city com- bined in a way that is difficult to explain yet very real; it is the place where memories hap- pen. Nacogdoches and SFA. They belong together and they are a part of each other. And together, they are going somewhere in the future.
