DR. A. W. BIRDWELL President Emeritus Lcved and admired by all who know him, Dr. A. W. Birdwell, founder of Stephen F. Austin State College, is recognized as one of the leading educators in the country. He has given sound advice to thousands of young men and young women, and his counsel is still sought by the school men of East Texas. His entire life has been dedicated to improving the minds of young people, and it is he who has guided S. F. A. to its present high scholastic standards. It can truthfully be said that Dr. Birdwell is really Mr. S. F. A.

DR. PAUL L. BOYNTON President of S. F. A. It is always a pleasure and a privilege to be able to extend greetings and best wishes to our graduates. When we look around us, not only in our own immedi- ate area in East Texas but also throughout the state and nation, and see the hundreds and thousands of other graduates of S. F. A. taking their places of leadership in the educational, social, and economic life of our times, we know that you who are graduating this year are going forth to join a most distinguished group. Colleges, of course, have a primary obligation to train students towards greater self-sufficiency, and fuller utilization of their fundamental aptitudes. We have but to notice the impact of educated men and women on the industrial and economic life of our nation to realize that education has lifted us far u p the scale of material comforts and economic security. It is our hope, however, that college graduates, and particularly the graduates of Stephen F. Austin State College, will never be content to confine their contributions, no matter how significant, to the material progress of our people. We hope that while you have been with us you have re- ceived that inspiration or urge which is needed so great- ly by all to contribute generously to the great intangibles of life. Intangibles much as personal integrity, respect for the rights of all men, enlightened patriotism, the value of the spiritual in individual and social existence, love of home and a full understanding of its role and significance in all human affairs. So as we bid you good-bye, as we say it has been a real pleasure to have had the opportunity to have worked with you these few short years, as we wish you the best of success in your various vocations, we also admonish you to set your ideals high, to be vigilant at all times in your pur- suit of the best in life. We hope that while you were with us you not only have learned better how to make a living, but also how to be outstanding men and women worthy and deserving of all good things. PAUL L. BOYNTON 19
