When you receive your copy of the Stone Fori another college year will have passed: a year of opportunities improved or abused. Some of us have additional years in college; some are receiving their last annual. To all the book will be a reminder of college activities for the school year of 1939-40. It will increase in value throughout all the coming years. We like to look back, and, happily, things in the past are magnified. I trust that each member of the college family has had a happy year, which means, after all, a year of growth. I trust that each has been filled with the joy of learning, and that this joy is so poignant that it will become an established habit. It goes without saying that I wish for each student many years of growing and serving, that each one will compensate the State for the opportunities afforded here by becoming an intelligent, progressive citizen of the State. Speaking for both myself and the college faculty, may each one of you carry to your homes genuine affection for the College Among the Pines. A. W. Birdwell, President.
