STAFF The 1987-88 school year at Austin began with the mid- dlemigh school receiving a new principal. Mrs. Winifred ' Winnie McDaniel, was assigned to Austin after Dr. Chester Levy retired after 17 years of service at Austin. One of McDaniel's goa!s is to improve test scores. On Monday twins ran around school, Katrina DeRouen and Dallas Ronguille were the winners while on Tuesday JoAnn Miley and Carlos Serna won Kiddie Day. 60's day was held on Wednesday and Michelle Simmons and Tim Alexander were the winners. Thursday was Panther Buster Day and Katrina DeRouen and Bobby Durham were the two wmners. Graylin Johnson and Dianna Marshall were elected Mr. and Ms Spirit, while Chris Lalonde and Anita McElroy were chosen Mr. and Miss Good Sportsmanship. Other activities included the Wednesday night Power Puff game. This is where the girls traded their pom pens and skirts to take the field wearing football uniforms as the guys cheered them on with the porn pons. The game was won by the combin- ed team of juniors and freshmen. The students gathered together to decorate the halls earlier in the week. This competition was won by the senior class. During halftime ceremonies Deana White was crowded as the 8788 Homecoming Queent Tony Brown was crowned during the coronation ceremony that was held during school. CHEERLEADERS 26 The 1987-88 junior varsity cheerleaders were Toy Perry, Jodie Ballou, Kristi England, Jen- nifer Stevenson, and Christina Kruger. The junior varsity cheerleaders did very well at camp. Sponsor Regina Gaspard said, The cheerleaders worked very hard, but it was well all of the hard work. They brought home four superior ribbons, one excellent ribbon, and also an HAward for the Excellence nominee to SFA. They also brought home the 'lspirit stick from camp. JV cheerleaders are all smiles as they pose for the camera. JV cheerleaders are Christina Kruger, Jodie Ballou. Jennifer Stevenson, Dristi England, and Toy Perry. They are performing a pyramid at one of the pep rallies, Kristi, Christina, Jennifer and Jodie are getting ready to perform at the pep rally. MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS The seven Middle School Cheerleaders for 1987 were Salina Hopper h head cheerleader, Christina O'Donald, Jeana Chance, Jodi McFarlin, Michelle McFarlin, Loukisha Kemper, and Trenall Jackson. From cheerleader camp they brought home three ex- cellents and one superior rib- bon. They also entered Cavoilcade for competition and came in first place. HBeing a cheerleader was a good experience and a lot of fun, said Jodi McFarIin, Camp was one of the funnest parts of being a cheerleader even though it was hard work, said Jeana Chance. Our 1987 Middle School Cheerleaders showed a lot of spirit to represent our school and the football players for the middle school as well as the high school. The band served as an important representative of SFA. The band is under the direction of Mri Sam McMahoni This was McMahon's first year at SFA. He spent his time helping the band members prepare for marching at football games. ui have found that the students who like to play their horns are the most enjoyable to be around. Also, the middle school students seem to be able to read and play music well, They were also a big help when we lost some members of the band to H8 72, said Mre Sam McMahon. Some of the other activities that the twirlers performed included pep rallies and they also participated in all of the homecoming festivities. STILWELL Stilwell has been a big step for- ward for Austin High School students. It gives them a head start on their careers and guarantees some of the students a future job. Stilwell offers different types of classes. They are health occupa- tions, drafting, VOE, auto mechanics, and cosmetology. Many of the students from Stilwell enter their work in a contest called VICA. VICA also has a state board. This board consist of people ali around the state running for office. Becky Benoit served as Secretary of State for VICA this past year. The members must maintain at least a 4.7 average on a 5.0 scale. Some of the activities for the Honor Society are teacher appreciation days, blood drive for Southwest Texas Blood Bank Also they donate toys at Christmas, donate items to Gaspards Nursing Home for Easter. The sponsor for JNHS is Mrs. Geraldine Viltz. 43 e DECATHLON The Academic Decathlon is an event that is not limited to only high achieving students. Each team consists of nine members, including three A average students, three uB average students, and three C average students. Decathlon competition is divided into ten separate parts: six tests of academic strength, three demonstrations of communication ability, and finally the Super-Quiz, which is a team event performed before a large audience. SeF.A.'s Decathlon team worked very hard preparing for the contest. They met weekly and even at night for group study. They competed regionally against 18 area schools, vying for a spot in the state meet. This year's team included Seniors Michael Gouthier, Tiffaney Tucker, and Jason Chenaulte Junior members were Laura Ortega, Donald Ford, Graylynn Viltz, Andrea Odom, Zelinka Deal, and Marcos Serna. 44 Marketing Education started in 1937 in four Texas High Schools. Today this program is in over 500 high schools in Texas. Marketing Education is a program that provides ihe high school student the opportunity to stay in school and learn while working the business world. Until three years ago, Marketing Education was called D.E. or Distributive Educa- tion. State-wide there are over 20,000 M.E. students. Almost half of these will graduate from college. The team acccamplished more than any SFA aasketball team since 1965. They won district, bi-district and the area championship before finally losing to the state x,hampions the Sweeny Bulldogs. Coach Reece thinks his players did a very good job at working together and working hard. He said that the greatest improvement this year was Jimmy Carruth. Although there will be some things they will have to adjust to such as learning to drive, harder classes, and more independence. The 1987-88 class officers for the eighth grade class are: Carlos Serna - President, Tiffany Williams e Vice President, Salina Hopper - Secretary, and Carey Richard - Parliamentarian, These officers have shown exceptional leadership values for their class according to teachers.
