FOREWORD The steps of life go up and down just like our laughter and our tears. And often we look back and see in our footprints the record we’ve made at S.F.A. Let’s go through this BRONCO and trace the steps we have en- joyed taking. Then, without a backward glance, let’s walk into the future with our heads up and say, I was a part of the most wonderful student body in the world ” CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FEATURES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS To all the teachers of S.F.A. for their understanding, patience, generosity, and unselfishness in giving the Bryan Broncos the best education possible, we dedicate this BRONCO 1954. They scored 30 points to Brenham’s 0. The Broncos scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters and two in the last quarter. The entire team saw service, with the substitutes doing as well as the regulars. It was an impressive opening of the 1953 football season. The Broncos gained a total of 345 yards rushing and Brenham 114 yards. The Broncos kept their winning streak on fire by trouncing the Tigers from Conroe by a 13-0 score. It was the second time a Bronco team had defeated Conroe in twenty years. Skeeter Jones, behind a good blocking line had a total yard- age gain of 166 yards. Smith caught a pass in the end zone for the first touchdown. Neal Godwin accounted for the second score in the second quarter. The Broncos gained 285 yards to Conroe’s 142. The Broncos ran head-on into a snarling fire-spitting dragon from Nacogdoches, and was subdued by a hard charging and vicious tackling team, that kept the Bronco attack bottled up and gave them their first defeat of the season, 14-0. It was Nacogdoches' offense that the Broncos couldn’t stop. The Broncos gained 107 yards rushing to Nacogdoches' 166 yards, but could never find the goal line punch to score. JAMES SMITH End BOBBY BRUTON Tackle GLENN BROWN Guard SKEETER JONES Back SKIPPER CONNOR Back CHARLES GALLOWAY Back PAT PIPPIN Guard wrv tlM. JACKIE ROBINSON Tackle The Bronco team just did get back on the winning side again by defeating Bishop Byrne 7-6. It was the second victory over Bishop Byrne High School of Port Arthur. The Broncos were outplayed the entire game, gaining only 112 yards rushing to the Catholic's 244 yards. Bishop Byrne scored first on a long pass, but failed to kick the point after the touchdown. They led all the way until only a few minutes before the game ended when the Broncos, never admitting defeat, completed a pass from Frank Seale to Smith for the touchdown. Skectcr Jones kicked the deciding point that won the game for the Green and White. The Bronco team took a pasting at the hands of the Luf- kin Panthers at Lufkin, 33-7. The Bronco defense could not stop the Lufkin attack and the Panthers rode the Broncos out of the park. The Broncos started rolling in the first quarter and then suddenly everything they did was the wrong thing. Total yardage gained by rushing for the Broncos was 163 to the Panther’s 342 yards. Lufkin had a strong team that outclassed the Broncos. Ken Bradberry. the shining light of the Green and White, would not give in and individually gained 89 yards. It was a long ride back to Bryan. The Green and White team scored first and sat back to test the strong Corsicana Tigers. Corsicana came right back to score from mid-field on a pass over the secondary. Then the Tigers could do no wrong; everything they tried worked with a charm. The Bronco pass defense failed miserably and they were set back with touchdowns in every quarter. Score 41-6. The Broncos could manage only 89 yards rushing. It was the first District loss and dazed the Green and White team. Another long ride home. Stinging from the defeat at Corsicana the Broncos played their best ball game of the season only to lose to the Mc- Callum Knights of Austin 13-7. Again the pass was the weapon that defeated the Broncos. The Green and White led McCal- lum 7-6 until only a few minutes before the game ended. McCallum completed a 29 yard pass and ran the ball over for the final touchdown and defeat for the Broncos. RICHARD PIGG End FRANK SEALE Back CHESTER JONES Back TOMMY MAINER Back DONALD GARNER Guard FREDDIE MAY Tackle NEAI. GODWIN Back ROYCE HUDSON Back The Broncos defeated the Travis Rebels from Austin on Bronco Field 14-6, giving them their only District win. Bron- cos scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and Travis came back to score their six points in the same quarter. Broncos gained 257 yards rushing to 126 yards for Travis. Skeeter Jones brought the stands to their feet when he broke through the Travis defense for 33 yards and a touchdown for the first score. Frank Seale scored the final touchdown from the one yard line. The Broncos, defeated by the District Champs 26-7, again were unable to make their pass defense click. Temple gained 126 yards on passing and 245 yards on the ground. Temple's defense held the Broncos to 88 yards. Again the Broncos were outclassed but not outfought. Temple scored in each quarter and the Broncos scored in the second with Galloway going over from the two. The Palestine Wildcats pasted the Broncos in their last game of the season 19-7. Richard Pigg took a short pass from Ken Bradbcrry and scored the first touchdown. In the second quarter Palestine came to life and bruised over three touch- downs. There was no more scoring during the game. Pales- tine, running from a spread and punt formation, gained 228 yards rushing to 85 for the Broncos. The Broncos outpassed the Palestine aggregation, amassing 186 yards to 63 for the Wildcats. For the first time the Broncos had a passing attack, and Ken Bradbcrry passed to Tommy Mainer for 29 yards the longest pass completion for the season. Thus ended the 53 football season, with four games won and six games lost. Temple won the District without a loss and Corsicana, McCallum, and Palestine tied for second place. The Broncos, winning one District game, finished the season above the cellar team, Travis. DAVID BUNTING End HORACE DANSBY Center JERRY HOLLIGAN Back JAMES PEURIFOY End wnnr Coach C.
