JcrujuitruL- As you turn through these pages and recall this and that with a smile, the staff hopes that you will enjoy these memories as much as we enjoyed recording them for you. It has been our aim to faithfully re- cord the regular activities of your school life, and to point out the progress of our great state of Texas from the covered wagons of the old West to the skyscrapers of the new empire. Mr. Crenshaw has always been a ''friend in need'' to all the students of S.F.A., and we wish to take this opportunity to ex- press in a small way our appreciation for all he has done. z o H - h- OC -J h- 3 A O “ Z u. 2 -o o c CITY HALL, BRYAN SCHOOL BOARD Finding room for all the students has been the problem of the school board this year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Billy G. Hugghins, Shirley Warren, Charles Dishman, Rota Stiteler, Luella Haupt, Martha Chambless, Jean Kirby, and Robert Hotard. OLD MEMBERS OFFICERS President LUELLA HAUPT Vice President JEAN KIRBY Secretary RETA STITELER The Stephen F. Austin Chapter of the National Honor Society was formed in 1929. Membership is limited to five per cent of the Junior Class and fifteen per cent of the Senior Class. Eligibility is based on four fundamental virtues recognized as most useful to society—scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Each year the initiation ceremony is the most impressive assembly program presented to the student body. To be elected to the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors a student may receive while in high school. NEW MEMBERS Bobby Burley, Gordon Graham, Kendrick Holleman, Shirley Campbell, Nancy Merrell, Sylvia Sosolik, Orin Helvey, Charlene Wehrman, Jean Penberthy, Peggy Taylor, Leatha Hill, Mary K. Eldred, Martha Montgomery, Joan Konecny, Judy Brown, Bill Hotard, Ann Corbusier, Anna C. Falgeau, and Carolo Lynch. QUILL AND SCROLL Quill and Scroll is a national journalism honor fraternity which encourages high standards for student publications. Now in the second year of its revived existence at S.F.A., Quill and Scroll played a hand in development of LaRemuda, and its members were instrumental in publishing of both that literary magazine and the annual Bronco. Sylvia Sosolik, Gordon Graham, Beta Stiteler, Martha Chambless, Nancy Merrell, Margaret Gib on, Charles Dishman, and Martha Montgomery. N S P A Merit awards of the National Scholastic Press Association were given at S.F.A. for the first time this year. Receiving awards were these members of the Corral staff: GOLD STAR HZ ANDERSON NEIDA BRUNS jeanne McDonald JOURNEYMAN CUB AWARD BENNETT TIBBS JEAN KIRBY SHIRLEY WARREN OTTIS SANDERS ALLIDENA DEARMOND SHARON POPE Billy Guy, Joan, Sylvia, Dick, Jeannine, and Bobby. Corsicana—1952. HOMECOMING At half time of the Corsicana game Sylvia Sosolik was crowned Homecoming Queen with Jeannine Webb and Joan Konecny as princesses. Tri-Captains, Dick Munday, Billy Guy Hugghins, and Bobby Holliday, made the presentations. Dick crowned the Queen while the others presented the Princesses with large, white mums. The Queen receiv- ed a dozen white carnations tied with the Bronco colors. Green and white, and a gold football inscribed Homecoming Queen- 1952. The nominees for Homecoming were as follows: Ann Copeland Verna Joy Duckett Carolyn Falgeau Joan Konecny Sylvia Sosolik Jeannette Streetman Yvonne Streetman Carolyn Vance Jeannine Webb BRONCO AWARDS MICHIKO HIDAKA Michido Hidaka, a student from Tokyo, Japan, entered our school in October. With no conversational ability in the English lan- guage, she faced an immense problem of mastering our language to the extent of entering regular class work and gaining credits in several subjects. She quickly won our respect by her industry, interest, and eagerness to learn. We should mention that she won our admiration through her inter- pretation of Japanese dances. CITIZENS OF THE WEEK Three out of the four weeks of every month some outstanding student was elected by the Student Council to appear before the Rotary Club for luncheon on Wednesday, because of some special service to the school. Bishop Byrne at Bryan—Shamrocks came up from Port Arthur with a touted All- American back, Meyers, who demonstrated that this honor was well received. But Bryan got an early break, recovering a fumble on the 6-yard line. Helvey went over behind Bobby Holliday's fine blocking. Sensational 40-yard return of a punt by Bradberry gave the deciding score, 13-6. Bryan at Kilgore-Fighting Broncos came from behind to overcome the Drillers 14-7.
