ATHLETICS O juusiT I he 1939 football season was the most satisfactory for the Bryan Broncos since they returned to the highest classification in 1 exas Interscholastic League football and were put in the strong Central Texas district. I he high victory percentage and the Broncos’ | erformances, whether winning or losing, combined to make it such. From the time they astounded I exas fandom with a 19-f triumph over a veteran Beaumont Royal Purple team until they closed by tying Cleburne in the rain and mud, they never let their supporters down. 1 1 here were two losses, but highly favored Corsicana had the scare of its life before winning in a nerve- tingling 2( -18 clash, and Waco, runner-up in the State race, waited until the State championship game with Lubbock to meet another club that could duplicate the Broncos feat of scoring three touchdowns against the 1 igers. Only in the final game, where mud helped hold the tally down to 6-6, did the green and white fail to cross the enemy goal line at least twice. I he year also produced Bryan s strongest candidate for all-Statc honors in many seasons. He was the triple-threat back, Leo Daniels, whose many long scoring dashes included kickoff returns against Sam Hous- ton of Houston and Waco. Leo was one of four I exaiis on the all-Southern squad, made some prominent all-State selections, and was a unanimous all-district choice. ci the acute lack of experience and weight—the Broncos were outweighed in every game—had local followers expecting little at first, furthermore. after the | ener with Beaumont, an injury jinx had from one to five regulars on the bench in every game.
