As these lines are being written, the German defenses in the West are crumbling, and Japanese islands only three hundred miles from Tokyo are being invaded. The spearheads of these tremendous attacks consist largely of young men who but a few short months and years ago were in high schools throughout the country. To their great courage and devotion to duty, do we owe the peace and quiet which enables us to go about our daily tasks with few inconveniences. We have not been bombed. We have not been driven from our homes into slavery. How small, how insignificant are the problems of the home front com- pared to the realities of war on the battlefield. How trivial must a civilian complaint about lack of butter, or a choice cut of meat, seem to a man engaged in the actual fighting-a man who hasn't had a warm meal for days, who has had to sleep in a mud hole, and who, as part of his daily work, must charge machine guns, face artillery barrages and be ready to meet death at any moment. Peace-that is what he fights for-yours and mine! What about the peace to which he is entitled! When he returns we must see that conditions are such that, in small part at least, he shall be compen- sated for his tremendous sacrifices. We must see that he has a job and that, if incapacitated, his family has adequate care. We must give him peace of mind and of body insofar as we are able.
