REV. ARCHIE PENNER, B. A. REGISTRAR Theology, church history, public SPEAKING, DEPARTMENT SPECIALIZATION, MODERN CULTS, GREEK. Mr. Buhler was born at Grimsby, near Plum Coulee, Man. He spent the early years of his life on the pioneer homestead of his parents. At the age of fifteen he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour, through the influence of a visiting Gospel team. He received his first eight years of edu¬ cation at the local school. He attended high school for one year at Plum Coulee and finally completed his Grade XII at the Winkler Collegiate. Continuing his pursuit for knowledge, Mr. Buhler commenced studies at United College, where he spent one year. After two more years of study he acquired his B. A. degree at the Univer¬ sity of Manitoba. Besides his secular education, Mr. Buhler has studied the Word of God at the Win¬ nipeg Bible Institute and also at the Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alberta. Dur¬ ing the summer of 1944 he was engaged in mission work in the Inter-lake District of Manitoba, under the C.S.S.M. In the 1952-53 season he taught in the high school at Sprague, in South Eastern Manitoba. At various times he has assisted in Sunday School work, and in the organization of Young People’s groups. We are fortunate to have Mr. Buhler on the staff of the S.B.I., and trust that God may use him in a mighty way for the in¬ struction of the secular subjects to those who are preparing for life’s service. Mr. Penner was born and brought up on a farm near Lorette, Manitoba. As a young boy he loved animals and nature and would often spend hours roaming the nearby woods. He was saved at eighteen years of age. The death of his father contributed largely to this decisive step for Christ. He made a thorough break with his old life and really desired to serve the Lord. In 1937 Mr. Penner began his formal Bible training at the Winnipeg Bible In¬ stitute. He graduated in 1940. In 1947 he married a graduate of the Steinbach Bible Institute, Miss Elvira Friesen. Their home has been blessed with two children, James 5, and Lucille, 1. Mr. Penner was often engaged in evan¬ gelistic work. In 1953 he was ordained as a minister of the Gospel in the Evangel¬ ical Mennonite Church at Steinbach. He has been a teacher at the Steinbach Bible Institute for five years since 1946. Inter¬ mittently he has been attending both Gosh¬ en and Wheaton Colleges in the States. In February of this year Mr. and Mrs. Penner and their family left again for Goshen, Indiana, where Mr. Penner is at present engaged in further studies to be¬ come better fitted to teach the Word of God. It was just this time of year—Palm Sunday to be exact—that a young chap Knelt alone in his bedroom and received the Saviour. That chap was yours truly. I cannot go into details of life that preceded this won¬ derful event, but suffice it to relate that deep conviction had seized my spirit. Under that terrible cloud of spiritual agony I had struggled for many months. Two faithful witnesses crossed my path; an Anglican clergyman, Rollo Boas, and a Baptist lay¬ man, Sam Gretzinger. Both told me the Way of Life through Christ. How I thank God for their testimony! Where would I be today were it not for their words and work? Finally that glorious night referred to above, came and I surrendered to the Lord Jesus. The truth of Revelation 3:20 stood out in bold letters in my mind. At last I capitulated to the Man of Sorrows! He en¬ tered my heart and began a great work! What a change he wrought! From one who used to play in a Jazz orchestra and was very fond of the dance; He changed me to a preacher of the Gospel and one who now tries to help young folk to “sing with the spirit and with the understanding also.” I do thank God for His goodness and mercy to me and heartily recommend Him to all as a Wonderful Saviour, Friend and Guide. MISS MARY LOEWEN DEAN OF WOMEN CHILD STUDY. PIANO. SUNDAY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION. REV. GEORGE DUGARD SCHOOL CHORUS, VOCAL CULTURE. “Suffer the little children to come unto me.” It was my privilege last summer to work with children in northern Saskatchewan. One of our tasks was to visit the rural schools with half-hour Bible programmes, using flannelgraph to make the stories clearer. Since we were not given school time in many schools, we are happy that most of the children remained in school for our class. One wonders just how much seed sown will bear fruit, since we were not allowed to give invitations to children to accept Christ. Should some take the Lord Jesus as their Saviour from sin, will they stand fast when they have possibly little or no encouragement from home, and when the teaching in church in some cases is differ¬ ent from ours? Then our thoughts turn to God’s promise, “My word . . . shall not return unto me void,” and our prayer goes up to Him that the Holy Spirit will con¬ tinue to speak to the children after the classes are over. He is able to keep them from falling. 11
