In the earliest days of Protestant sett¬ lement on this continent, the schools were basically those maintained by pas¬ tors of churches in connection with their pastoral duties. A few were maintained by teachers other than pastors, especially for teaching girls. But in all these schools the hornbook primer was based on the Bible, and the main textbook was the Bible. All of the early colleges were founded by churches for training their young- men as pastors. The first nonsectarian college — now the University of Penn¬ sylvania — was founded by Benjamin Franklin and others in 1740, over a cen¬ tury after the first church colleges. But from that beginning, changes were gradually made until now the state con¬ trols the greater part of education. With state control, religion and the Bible have been eased out of the curriculum to the point of complete exclusion. Secular edu¬ cators claim that religion cannot be taught successfully in public schools to Prote¬ stants, Catholics, Jews and the innumer¬ able other religions and sects. They say that in order to avoid embarrassment of some students, the public school must maintain complete silence on controversi¬ al religious matters. Thus they exclude all Bible and religion from the curricu¬ lum. Since nothing generates stronger emo¬ tions than religion, we may agree that the public schools, to avoid disastrous con¬ troversy, should maintain complete si¬ lence on religious matters. This they claim to do. But they have betrayed their trust! In practise they depart completely from this principle! They will not teach anything favoring religion: but they pro¬ pagate antireligious propaganda! The Christian faith is definitely theo- centric, spiritual. Public education is hu¬ manistic, materialistic, evolutionary. Chri¬ stianity places God first; they place man first. The Bible makes man a fallen creature needing redemption; they make man the acme of the universe. Christiani¬ ty places emphasis on the future life; they make the present life summum bon- um. The Bible makes the universe and its creatures the work of the omnipotent God; they make the universe the product of untold eons of evolution. Public education is not nonreligious: it is impious, antireligious! Of the ten textbooks, other than Englsh and liter¬ ature, approved in Manitoba for grades X and XI, general course, one states flat¬ ly that it is evolutionary; three are evolutionary without using the term; one is questionable; five are not evolutionary. But of the last five, four deal with sub¬ jects such that evolution could not pos¬ sibly be dragged into them. Newman Watts, English journalist, writes, “Every attack on the Christian faith made today has, as its basis, the doctrine of evolution.” T. H. Huxley, the peer of evolutionists, is quoted: “Evolution, if consistently ac¬ cepted, makes it impossible to believe the Bible.” This is more clearly seen when one realizes that Neitzsche’s philosophy is based directly on Darwin’s evolutionary theory. Yet it is this devil’s brew that the public schools are feeding students under the guise of leaving religious matters strictly alone! A protest against this antichristian at¬ titude is being raised by the increasing number of evangelical Christian grammar and high schools. Not many years ago, the only Protestant group with any num¬ ber of Christian schools was the Luther¬ ans. Only in Christ can we live out the life depicted by Paul in this verse: only through Christ we have a desire to press toward the mark. Our life in Christ is something not to be trifled with or taken for granted; it is as much a reality as the Word itself. The Holy Spirit is a faithful Guide and has led me into deeper experiences with God. I praise God that He has given me a chance to attend my second year of Bible School. My time at school holds many sacred memories, and since He has done so much for me, the least that I can do is to give my all to Him. Wm. Hanchar. GRADE CLASS REPORT To us the Steinbach Bible Academy is not just another “temple of learning”, but the school the Lord has chosen for us, in which to continue our High School educa¬ tion in such a way as will enable us to be of greater service to Him. We feel privi¬ leged in having the opportunity of at¬ tending a school still based on the sound teachings of the Bible, as so many mo¬ dern schools today are detrimental to the spiritual welfare of the young people at¬ tending them. Our science course this year includes the interesting study of geology. We quite freely disagree with our textbooks in that they state that all geological changes of the past are due to the slow process of erosion, decay of plants and animals, and similar procedures thro’ endless ages. One observation of scient¬ ists that makes the theories of “unifor- matism” improbable, is the unexplain¬ able phenomena of the intergradation of rock. The most probable solution that we as Christians can accept, is that some great catastrophe as the Great Flood, caused the drastic changes that occured. Many scientists today have not only cast aside the theories of evolution, but have found true science in complete accordance with the Scriptures. Through their detailed study of the universe, they have come to realize the existence of a Great Creator — a Master Mind who originated such a marvellous plan of creation! Our hearts too are lifted up in adoration and wor¬ ship as we study the various phases of God’s handiwork in such subjects as chemistry, astronomy, biology and ge¬ ology. We are thankful that the Academy is blessed with teachers who help us to differentiate between false and true teachings — taking their supreme autho¬ rity from God’s Holy Word.
