Ship's History USS STEIN IFF-1065l is a Knox class frigate named in honor of Corporal Tony Stein, Marine hero and Medal of Honor winner in World War ll. The FF-1052 Class vessel is configured for optimum anti-submarine performance, howev- er, when equipped with the harpoon missile, anti-surface warfare is also a primary mission area. STEIN is capable of carrying out other routine destroyer tasks, such as naval gunfire support, anti-air warfare and replenishment oper- ations. The keel of USS STEIN was laid on 1 June 1970 at Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Wash. She was launched 19 December 1970, and was com- missioned on 8 January 1972 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. STEIN departed her homeport of San Diego for her first WESTPAC deployment in April 1973 returning in Novem- ber. STElN's second WESTPAC deployment dated from September 1974 through April 1975. In November 1976, STEIN returned to San Diego after an extensive eleven month overhaul in Portland, Oregon. She completed her third WESTPAC which lasted from February through August 1978. STEIN' next WESTPAC deployment was from August 1979 through February 1980 of which she was part of the first battle group in the Indian Ocean after the fall of Iran and the ensuing hostage crisis. Because of the hostage crisis and a long continuous time at sea, many liberty ports were can- celled but Stein did visit eastern African ports such as Mom- basa, Kenya and Somalia, Berbera. STEIN also visited Aus- tralia, the Philippines Islands and Japan as well as cruising the northern waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. June of 1980 brought the beginning of another overhaul in Portland, Oregon continuing through May of 1981. With her return to San Diego, STEIN commenced a rigorous schedule of tests and local operations in preparation for the July 1982 deployment. Deploying with only two other frigates, STEIN was able to enjoy such exotic ports as Maizuru, Sasebo and Yokosuka in Japan, Pusan in South Korea, the city of Singapore, and Subic 8ay in the Philippine Islands. The highlight of the cruise was STEIN's five week surveil- lance operations of the Soviet Aircraft carrier MINSK. Her course took STEIN around the South China Sea, through the Strait of Malacca and into the Indian Ocean. STEIN received several commendations from Seventh Fleet Commanders for outstanding intelligence reporting. After returning on 4 February 1983 to San Diego, STEIN began yet another year of upkeep, inspections, and oper- ations gearing up for the next deployment date in January 1984.
