With a heavy emphases on writing, the members of the English department lov- ingly insisted upon the importance of writing EVERY DAY. It took less than a week for English students to find their hands permanently molded to pens, eyes glued into an editing mode. Slowly but surely, the personal act of writing be- came less difficult and more an act of discovery. Through writing, students gained an understanding of literature, poetry, grammar, mass-media and ulti- mately, themselves. Sandy Conlin Bob Korver 62 Tanna Brock Teresa Sharp When it comes to stretching one's mind, the Math department took the tortuous prize. The challenge of learning was of- fered to any student willing to try. Each member of the staff worked the kids minds, stressing self-discipline and problem solving. 63 s 0 c 1 A L T U D I E S East is East. West is West — two different colors on the Map. Break the line! Chew the fat! Keep moving out into the Gap! Marie Antoinette said, “There is nothing new except what has been forgotten.'' Members of the Social Studies depart- ment taught the workings of our society through historical, economical and geo- graphical perspectives. They stressed that knowledge of the past could en- hance the future. 64 I Don’t believe it! She’s done it again! She’s tidied up and I can't find any- thing. All my tubes and wires and careful notes ... antiquated notions. She blinded me with Science! Albert Einstein once said, The most in- comprehensible thing about the uni- verse is that it is comprehensible. He was perhaps one of the most intelligent men on earth, and it was in his spirit that Romberg, Riggs and Craig unfolded the seemingly incomprehensible’’ world of Science. Each discovery made by a stu- dent, though done by others countless times before, was brand new; the teach- ers watched with understanding and de- light as each student realized the capaci- ty of his her mind. Through Science, they gained a closer understanding of the workings of the world. Dan Craig, Bud Romberg, Rick Riggs C ■ I e n c e Hey everybody watcha' doin' tonight? I see the girls walk by dres- sed in their summer clothes. I have to turn my head until my darkness goes. I see a line of cars and they're all painted black. Both flowers and my love want never to come back. I see people turn their heads and quickly turn away. Like a newborn baby it just happens every- day I look inside myself and see my heart in black. I see my red door, I must have it painted black. Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts. It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black. No more will my green sea turn a deeper blue. I could foresee this thing happening to you. If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will last with me until the morning comes. The coaches and trainers in the athletic department assured that each student reached his her greatest capacity in fitness. An understanding of the relationship between a healthy mind and the healthy body, brought each stu- dent a step closer to the Greek idea of ” Student learned to enjoy the exhi- leration of movement, the triumph of pushing themselves beond the limits, and the loyalty and discipline involved in both individual and team sports. She made the big change from New Zealand to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In January of 1985 Robyn arrived in Steamboat and got her first glimpse of snow. She spent one year here and enjoyed many activities such as skiing, hiking, and she especially liked her two week tour of the South Western, U.S. with other exchange students. NOW AND FOREVER When love is new and the world is out reaching for you. We try hard to hold it all in our hands but it slips through like soft drifing sands. But drying the tears can build it all like new. Now and Forever remember the words from my heart will always be true. Together in all that I feel is my love for you. Learning each day that the right time was so far away. To tell you the things that I knew now it’s clear that the moment we searched for us here and counting the years is all I want to do. The exchange student program is a great way to meet people, and that's why Heike Ebeling became involved in the program. Heike chose America be- cause she knew it would be a very differ- ent experience. Colorado was her first choice so she would be able to ski. Heika got here in August and gets to spend a year in beautiful Steamboat Springs with us. Heike lives in West Germany with her parents and her fifteen year old brother. Germany has a lot of American influ- ence, so things like music, drinking age, and even voting age are the same. Dire Straits is one of Heike's favorite groups, and they are big in Germany also. Her most favorite song is Love System, by Barcley. LOVE SYSTEM - BARCLEY Love is deep and the mountain is so high, and you want to see God, you've to move on by. stand up there with your head in the clouds. You'll try to fly you know you might not come down. Don't try to fly near God you might not come down. Jesus came down from heaven to earth the people said it was a Virgin birth. For the last three years I have been a pSft of the staff and for the past two years I have been the Editor. The biggest challenge of being a part pf the annual staff is meeting a deadline and it is very rewarding to see the finished product. I would like to give a special thanks to the following people who have offered me the support I needed to be an effective Editor. Mrs. Robson Mrs. Ravenscroft Mrs. Ladow George Barnett Steamboat Piolot The staff of SSHS I hope the '87 Galleon is enjoyed by each of my classmates at SSHS. ■ V-l s? rQ rr- V - . vV £e LV 3 Witz . r5 rll Sin tAW iwt -5 rtWfrf-K --r: „. • wst m I r..
