There is always plenty of work to keep the administration busy. Be- sides the normal amount of paperwork, attending meetings and disciplining the students, Harlan Lear, principal, has his hands full. Mr. Lear and Mr. Gray are always busy working on curriculum, planning school activities, attendance policies, forming budgets and working with the students. Administrators, secretaries, and counselors did more paperwork and pulled more hours in a day than anyone might imagine. These people were striv- ing for excellence in managing the school and serving the students. There were few people handling many jobs. Counselors are just the persons to turn to when you feel you can t talk to your parents and your friends seem uninterested. They are a great bunch of people. For some reason or another there was always someone in the coun- selors office. Many students went to sign up for an additional class or drop one. Some students were in the office trying to waive a physical education credit or change a math credit into an english credit. Administrators, Counselors and Secretaries are the people who deserve a round of applause and a pat on the back. These were the people who made the difference. Winter Carnival '86 Miss Liberty and Her Kids Steamboat Springs celebrated its' 73rd annual Winter Carnival this year. The theme of this year's carnival was Miss Liberty's Kids. The carnival started with the annual button designing contest at the high school. The winner of the contest was Rachel Weber. The carnival started with the ski jumping contest at Howelson Mill. Through the week of Winter Carnival, there are things such as art shows and ice sculptures with the ski jumping continuing through the week. Winter Carnival ends with the annual parade bidding farewell to locals and tourists alike. Homecoming '85 Chad Huntington is ail smiles. Glory Days Homecoming proved to be a week to remember in 1985. The series of dress up days and noon activities. Students got into the spirit by dress- ing out of this world,” wearing their favorite polyester” clothes, and dressing in the school's colors, red and white. The noon activities included such events as water balloon volleyball games, the egg toss, and silly relays. The Homecoming football game was a disappoint- ment to the players and the fans alike. Despite the efforts of the team, their Glory Days were rained out. The Eagle Valley Devils won the game 15-8. The egg toss was a lunchtime attraction. The 1985-86 sailor gymnastics team got off to a bad start. With so many different personalities, the girls had a hard time working together. When the competition started it pulled the girls closer together and pushed them to try harder. Having to travel so many miles to get to a meet, meant that the girls had a lot of time on the road to get their differences worked out. The season ended sadly, but successfully. The Steamboat Springs Sailors High School Football Team has improved greatly since last year, not saying that last year was an unproductive year for the Sailors. Their record showed that they were far better this year than they were last year. The Sailors Varsity record was 4-5, opposed to last year's 1-8 record. They do have the potential. Getting better The 1985 volleyball season was an improvement for the team. Although they didn't have a consistant winning streak, the players improved their skills as a team and as individuals. The lack of experience was still a slight problem for the team, but they still played the best they knew how. With the help and guidance of Mrs. Sharp and Mr. Korver, they proved to the other teams that the Sailors were not to be taken too lightly. It is played in almost every country of the world. In the United States the game of soccer is just now becoming a serious sport. We the peo- ple of the United States of America need to pull together and help the game of soccer become a great American pas- time. This very law holds true in this community. Our community has sup- ported soccer through the AYSO pro- gram, but we believe that we are ready for a more competitive set up. This year was a good one for our soccer team. We won most of our games with only three seniors returning. We see a very big future for this sport if only we could get the support of our high school and the rest of the community. Thank you for your support! Soccer is our life. Skiing Roxby Hatcher in superb form at Vail. Andy Stoughton demonstrating angulation. Qreg R. Rawlings focusing in on a gate. Doug LZ not shining. It is not a school sponsored sport, but the most successful athletes to originate from our town participate in some sort of skiing discipline whether it be Alpine racing, Mordic country racing, Nordic jumping, or Freestyle. This past winter was a fine one for Steamboat as far as competitive skiing goes. We held our first Junior National Ski Jumping event, which is where jumpers and nordic combined skiers try to qualify to compete at the Junior Worlds. Alpine Racing received a very prestigious Nor-Am. 73 Sailors Win Conference Championship The 1985-86 edition of Sailor basketball won the AA conference championship and qualified for the state play- offs. The Sailors finished with a record of 14-2 in regular season play with the two losses coming at the hands of Moffat County. The team advanced into the sub-district tournament as the No. 3 team in the state of Colorado. The Sailors have been ranked No. 2 or 3 all season long in the polls as they have an undefeated record against AA competition. Rob Bosick and Jon Baskin are the only two seniors in this club. Juniors are Doug Appel, Brad Derosa, Derick Duckels, Chad Johnson, Bill Gray, Jon Lamb, Justin McCarthy, Chad Sessions, and Derick Duckels. Sophomore Chris Roberts and Freshman Mike Rice. The fast-paced Sailor attack averaged 76.6 points an outing with an average win spread of 15 points over their opponents. The fine passing and unselfishness of the young team characterized the Sailors from the beginning to the end of the season. The team scored over 80 points on eight occassions. Jon Baskin led the state in scoring, with an average of 28.1 points a game, and rebounding, with an average of 14 points a game, while setting all-time school records in both catagories. The All-Conference and All-State performed was also select- ed to the McDonalds Prep All-American Team. Starters along with Jon were Brad DeRosa, Derick Duckels, Bill Gray, and Justin McCarthy who were all selected honorable mention All-Confer- ence after the regular season and was a loss to the Sailors for the remainder of tournament play. Rob Bosick and Chad Sessions were super subs during the season with Sessions moving into the starting role after McCar- thy's injury. The Sailors are hoping to return to the state tournament for the second year in a row with the State Championship as everyone's main goal. Coach Stahl was pleased with the performance of the Junior Varsity team this year. Me stated that. The team kept improving throughout the course of the season. Coach Stahl was also pleased with the teams mental attitude saying. The kids had a great attitude towards the competition of the game. The team played some exciting games such as the game against Glenwood Springs in which the team scored 50 points in the first half of the game. The most annoying loss against Craig, the team came from behind in the second half and tied the game at the final buzzer. The game progressed into double overtime and Steamboat ended up losing by only two points. The team lost another overtime game against Roaring Fork, fighting to the finish. A basketball team usually plays with seven players but against Rifle, which was one of the top teams in the league, the Junior Varsity team consisted of five players and no bench warmers yet the team beat Rifle. Overall, the season was one of fun and excitement. The team started out with a five game winning streak, then the team lost a few and came back at the end of the season with three tremendously well played games. The Varsity team will be waiting for these players and they are well on their way. Steamboat . . 54 . . Meeker 49 Steamboat . . 57 . . Aspen 32 Steamboat . . 61 . . Jeanne Barnett was quite impressive as she led the state in rebounding totals. Jeanne was the only varsity experienced player on the squad this season. Using her leadership and guidance qualities she helped her younger teammates put togeth- er a late season surge that included a smashing defeat over Moffat Coun- ty and an upset of league leaders Glenwood Springs. The future looks bright for the Sailors as the Junior Varsity record- ed an 11-5 record. This record was the best in their history. With a lot of the students skiing the school was quieter and less crowded than usual. Even if the rest of the students were not skiing their minds were on the mountain and the skiing. Hurry up and take this picture so we can ski. Ski Bums!!! T he Galleon staff woul like to express a wj Dulci atu Thank you to the following people for their as- , sistance.
