Yearbook The yearbook this year consisted of five hard- working, dedicated students and staff members who labored many hours a week to produce this outstan- ding 128 page production. With an enrollment of 400 students only five came forth to help put out the 1984 GALLEON. Photography improved tremendously this past year because of an experienced darkroom crew. Starting off the year, after the first sixteen pages, the Editor quit, leaving the small staff without direc- tion. Head Photographer, Bob Thorvilson came to the rescue and took over as Editor. Meetings on Tuesday evenings turned into two and sometimes three sessions to meet a deadline. Overall, the old line . .. “if you want to get it done, do it yourself ... goes for the yearbook and student involvement this year. 82 National Art lienor Society National Art Honor Society The purpose of this club is to: — inspire and recognize those students who have shown outstanding ability in art — foster excellence and a dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art — further creative abilities — bring art to the attention of the school and community — increase an awareness of art in relation to other areas of the school curriculum This is the first year that S.S.H.S. has had a N.A.H.S. Chapter. Although not very active until spring quarter, the club will work on enhancing the school with bulletin board displays, murals and community work. The Mad” Potter. Jeff Dillingham, Is this a pot. or what?? International Relations Club A model United Nations General Assembly represents an effort to reproduce in essence the content and atmosphere of the public debates which do in fact take place in the real United Nations. Each participant represents a member nation and tries to state, and obtain support for, the views actually held by that country. This does not mean that the participants are mere automatons mechanically acting out roles. They may use their own ingenuity and words. They may modify the views of the na- tion they represent in order to reach compromises. The Model U.N. may anticipate future actions of the real U.N. In short, the Model U.N. is not a precise duplication. The aim of a model session is to deepen understanding of the purposes and work of the United Nations through intensive study and discussion of specific international problems which concern the world community. Close Up Club The National Close-up Club is a newly formed club of Steamboat Springs High School. Steam- boat has been invited, for its second year, to attend the National Close-up program. The people who have previously attended, or planning to attend either the National or the local Close-up program in Denver are members of the club. The members are its sponsor, Mr. Williams, Cathie Lanier — President, Carlynn Boggs — Vice President, Chris Huston, Debbie Marshall, Steve Har- rington, Steve Johnston and Per Trellevik. The Close-up program is designed to acquaint students with the government, both nationwide and local. The program informs students of their future roles in our government. The National Close-up program is a week long program in Washington, D.C. It includes seminars conducted by United States Representatives and Senators, cultural events, sight seeing around Washington, D.C., and ends with a formal dance. This year the students attending the National Close-up pro- gram are Carlynn Boggs, Chris Huston, Steve Johnston, Steve Harrington and Debbie Marshall. The National Close-up club is growing bigger each year with the increasing interest of students in our government. With the help of sponsors, the trip to Washington and further trips should be a great success. In the future, the National Close-up club will be able to become involved and of- fer many things to the faculty and student body. Even though they ended up with no scores for team results in most meets, the season was not totally discourag- ing. The team camaraderie was enjoyable throughout the season, leaving a positive lasting effect, and MIKE BUSH excelled to his limits, placing 4th in State. This was the highest finish a S.S.H.S. In years of adversity, lesser teams have crumbled, but the Sailors battl- ed their way to the very end, and when the measure of a champion was taken, Steamboat passed the test. The season is done, the field over- run, yet through this world I see a brighter sun than prizes won. I was the best that I could be. The season- ed story of quiet glory remains when all is done. The 1983 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS GIRLS' GYM- NASTICS TEAM was up against a shortened com- petitive schedule with Summit County and Mon- trose dropping their interscholastic programs. This left only six meets for the athletes to accumulate state qualifying scores. Stacie Hubbard qualified on balance beam. April Kinne on uneven parallel bars and balance beam, and the highlight was Vicki Mullison qualifying in the all-around category and then placing third in beam finals. The 1983-84 wrestling season was one that was both exciting and challenging. The season passed individual challenges to each wrestler. The challenges ranged from making weight to reaching deep into one's heart to come from behind a deficit to win. The season had its ups and downs, but after it was all over, everyone was a winner. This year there was a new goal to strive for in the form of SAILOR OF THE WEEK. The coaches gave this award to the wrestler who showed the best attitude, sportsmanship, desire and leadership during practices, and perfor- mance during competition. The season started off with a cold slap in the face for the Sailor Grapplers. They tied for seventh in a ten team field at the Steamboat In- vitational. There were only three Sailor wrestlers to break the top four, and they were M. Miller, S. Mewborn and Kylen Forbey, placing 4th, 2nd and 1st respectively. The Sailors bounced back after a week of practice and went on to the Meeker Tourney and did very well. At the West Grand Tourney the next week three Sailors took in- dividual championships; J. Arnold, S. Smith, and M. Miller. At the end of the season the Sailor record in dual meets was 8-4-0. District wrestlers to place were; S. Mewborn, K. Taylor, S. Smith, M. Miller, J. Doughty. K. Forbey and T. Zabel. Three Sailors went to State. K. Taylor, M. Miller and K. Forbey. K. Forbey placed third and M. Miller placed 5th. A solid year for “Ramunno's Warriors! Com- plimenting this fine group of Sailors were Juniors Chris Ahearn, John Robson, Guy Skufka, Mike VanGilder, Chris Wiese and Sophomore Jon Baskin. The team was ranked in the top ten of the state polls all year long. The year began at the Moffat County Tournament where the Sailors defeated AAA Grand Junction, a team that later played in the AAA State Tour- nament. After that success the team attracted large and en- thusiastic crowds throughout the season. One of the many highlights was the 81-68 victory over Moffat County, a team that won the AAA Southwestern Tournament and a berth in the AAA State Tournament.
