Sauer presents Student Council President Tony Golden with the school's first Coat of Arms. . . The school had lived nearly a year before it was dedicated on Nov. 29, 1966, and its final door opened. Its walls were tested and the ticking within proved more than the frame- work makes our school unique. Once a dream to the town of Steam- boat Springs and now a reality, the people have one more thing of which to be proud--something which will live. . . After formal dedication ceremonies, students conducted a tour for inter- ested persons and showed new facilities, explained future school plans, and introduced teachers. Principal Clarence Gardner receives keys from Marvin Brown, president of the Board of Education. . . . . . They who do not advance fall be- hind. . . The future of the students lies in what they learn today. It is the guidance and inspiration of those who teach that determines how far students advance, but success lies within oneself. . . 4 Seven new faculty members joined the SSHS staff last year, making the pupil - teacher ratio 1:15. In addition to the regular teaching staff were trained professional staff members in speech therapy, remedial reading, special education and child study. A full time counselor met regularly with individuals and groups for advice, particularly for vocational and college placement. 5 New facilities made possible new classes in second year woodwork, crafts, voca- tional metal, sociology, psychology, de- velopmental reading, ceramics, photog- raphy, stage speaking and more individual research. Many student activities stem- med right from the classroom--a mock legislative assembly, a fine arts maga- zine, photography projects, a weather station to put SSHS on the weather map, debate teams, public relations pamphlet. STUDENT LIFE . . . For the first time students conducted their own assemblies, introduced a chess club, the Mar- vellettes, and Student Council hosted a school visitation for league schools, chartered clubs, promoted opinion polls to better student life and sponsored a Beautiful Legs Contest for the March of Dimes. Students published the student handbook and initiated a Citizenship Award. . . 9 10 ATHLETICS. . . New physical education facilities included a home field, dressing rooms, track field, softball field, tennis courts, and two gymnasiums. Classes emphasized individual improvements, physical fitness and carry-over sports . . . Spirit soared as students originated a Pep Stick and again awarded a Mr. and Miss Pep. For the first time faculty enjoyed their own fun night in the gym. . . Major sports were as important as ever--SSHS wrestlers added their fifth state championship trophy to the trophy case and other firsts were at an all-time high. . . At the time of the completion of the first year in the new high school building, it seems appropriate to make a few statements in this regard. The building is an achievement by the Board of Education and the people of this community based on planning and work over a period beginning with the appointment on March 6, 1962, of a committee of the School Advisory Coun- cil to study the future needs of the school system for buildings. (One member of the present Board of Edu- cation was on this committee.) From March 1962 to the present, the Board of Education, school adminis- tration, faculty, members of the Advisory Council, and other interested members of the district have given time and energy to make the present new build- ing a reality. The entire school district indicated their support in this achievement by carrying the bond election by a substantial majority on the first attempt. The building is dedicated to all of the children who will attend Steamboat Springs High School and it should be noted that there may be persons yet unborn who will help pay for the building.
