m 'Dedication LOUISE HARMON ROLAND SHELTON foreword The aim of the 1953 Sailor Staff is to give the stu- dent body a reminder of their many trials, tribula- tions, and ever so many hours of happiness in S. S. H.S. Back row; N, Moore, T. Montoya, J. Palmer, W. Hicks, M. Richmond, R. Shelton, L. Harrison. Fron row: Mrs. Campbell, Sponsor, L. Truax, C. Shelton, L. Harmon, D. Dinkelman, N. Wilson, E. Dorr. ;Dedication The annual staff dedicates the '53 SAILOR to Mr. and Mrs. Foster. Through their many efforts during the past years they have brought ever so much joy into the Steam- boat Springs High School. We thank them for their willing help, encouraging words, and the many smiles which brighten our school life. It is again a privilege to congra- tulate the annual staff and their sponsor upon this fine book. It is also a privilege to be able to congratulate another fine senior class, the class of 1953, upon completion of this step in their education. The battle in today's world is not so much for Triangle Hill in Korea as it is for the minds of men. The stake in the battle is the survival of free institutions. This makes education in the free countries of the world more significant than at any time in recorded history. Dr. Albert Edward Wiggam says that these are the marks of true education: (1) The educated person cultivates an open mind. (2) He always listens to one who knows. (3) He never laughs at new ideas. (U) He knows the secret of get- ting along with other people. (5) He cultivates the habit of success. (6) He links himself with a just cause. (7) He knows it is never too late to learn. I hope that your experiences in the Steamboat Springs Schools have made a considerable contribution toward a true education, and that you will continue to work toward becoming a truly educated person as long as each of you shall live Sincerely, George P. SNOWDEN Wrestling Wrestling, fast becoming a leading sport in high school athletics has found its way into the hearts of many a Steamboat citizen. Wrestling has been most successful in Steamboat. We have competed for the past three years taking 3rd place the first year, second place the second year and 2nd place for the 1953 season. Steamboat has had their share of champions climaxed this year by Doug Sherrod winning the western slope championship in the 133 class, and a trip to the state meet in Denver. In league competition Steamboat has won most of their meets as shown by the following results. 1950-1951 1951-1952 1952-1953 Won Lost Won Lost Won Lost 5 2 8 2 6 2 Wrestling differs from football and basketball in that it is an individual sport and requires the utmost in physical conditioning and sportsmanship. We'can well be proud of our wrestling team for no where have they gone but what they received acclaim for their fine exhibitions of wrestling and sportsmanship. This next year should show a remarkable improvement in the squad as many of the boys will be competing for their third year and we should see more of our boys at the state meet. hihh ... The humorous comedy entitled June Mad seemed aptly suited to a high school cast. It is a story of teenagers caught in the dilemma of trying to enjoy themselves and grow up at the same time. The play revolves around Penny Wood, 15-year-old who feels her efforts of sophistication are hampered by her family and friends. The play was enjoyed by about two hundred people. This three act mystery kept the audience in suspense until the final curtain. Mr. George Holt, the President of the International Bank, was quite disturbed as a result of a threat by his twin brother. The whole family was slightly aroused at the strange appearance of the Russian doctor, Sonia, and the Hindu, Amir Din. The comedy part was very well played by Bobby Blake, Mr. Holt's secretary, whose pet phrase was Julius Caesar. Mr. George B.
