KT y X x FOOTBALL A new coach came to Stayton High this year. He is one Edwin K. Burton, Jr. just out of the Army and an assistant coaching job at Nyssa, Oregon. Mr. Burton graduated from Pacific University. Stayton started practicing football the day school open- ed, with a pretty good turn out. We bought six complete new uniforms, and with what we had, it wasn't enough. We didn't get off to such aggood start. Our first home game was with Mollala, who had a Championship team this year. The score was 55-O. The boys were pretty green in this game, because we had practiced only two weeks. The next Friday we went to Woodburn to play the Bulldogs, and came back on short end of 19-O defeat. Bill Mertz, fini string guard, suffered a broken ankle. That put him out of action for the rest of the season, a distinct disadvantage. In our next home game we lost 15-O to Sacred Heart Aca- demy from Salem. The next Friday we played the Silverton Foxes on our home field and I think it safe to say we played our best game of ball in the whole season that day, but were defeated 7-O. Next we went to Sandy and played mud ankle-deep, and were set back 20-O. . Our next game was at home with Estacada. Half back Swede Boedigheimer drew first blood for us this year by scoring the first touch down. WHapH Showers, left end, scored the second touch down, but in spite of this it looked like we were going to add another defeat to our list, till in the last quarter when we completed a pass from half back Ronnie Johnson to Right end Brown. The score 20-20. On Armistice Day we journeyed to Mount Angel, bound and determined for a win. We barely got 15-12 on touchdown's by Showers and Jordon. Also that day Ronnie Johnson stood out on ruining plays and yours truly completed a pass for 60 yards. In the here and we yours truly In our Canby. The played a 55 next to the last game of the season, Dallas came battled to a 15-15 tie. Touchdowns were made by and Half back Johnson. last game of the season we played a night game at field was muddy. It rained more. We were out 6 defeat. Our Full back, Theone Pieser, finally drawing blood for the score: Thus ended our rather haphazard football season with the following making letters: Ronnie Johnson, Theone Pieser, Richard Nienke, Fond Brown, Bob Karg, Wayne Follis, Jim Basl, Bill Mertz, Merle Limbeck, Dale Hopper, nSwedeN Boedigheimer, Lester Luke, Eldon Jordon, Glenn Archibald, Stanley Brown, Clair Limbeck, HHapn Showers, Clinton Wilson, Wayne Lierman, and Adam Mack.
