IHSA District Champs • A golfer is someone who yells 4, takes 6. and writes down 5. 12 SHS Golf team ended their season with a record of 7-5. They placed 1st in the IHSA District Tournament. They then placed 10th in the Sectionals. This was a first year for a girl to join the golf team. Patti Ruffini showed everyone that a girl can do just as well as any other golfer. Even though we are losing two seniors we hope that next year’s team shows as much effort and enthusiasm as this year’s. 13 Kevin Schulmeister Steve Katich Mike Lane Lady Bulldogs At State ‘ — !'5' I 1 ' |1 f ■ ULSIll nns 2 f iVl J I |MJ , L HI To say that this was an exciting year for volleyball is putting it mildly. Just about everyone felt the thrill of being a winner. It sparked enthusiasm in everyone. As the team kept stacking up victory after victory more fans started coming out to watch the games. It was exciting enough when the team captured the district championship. When they took the title at sectionals, everyone knew they wouldn’t stop there — they were “state bound.” So when they played in the super-sectionals at Carlinville, a fan bus carried approximately 50 enthusiastic fans up there to watch the game. After two very close (whew!) games, the Lady Bulldogs once again came through. Some shed tears of joy as the Staunton crowd rushed to the floor to congratulate the team. Thursday, December 4, was declared a school holiday so everyone could go up to Illinois State University to root for the Lady Bulldogs. Three fan buses were needed to transport the students to watch the volleyball team play in the state play- offs. The day didn’t end quite as everyone had hoped, but the team knew they were backed by a lot of people. Staunton High is very proud of the efforts put forth by the team and their coach. After all, being one of the top eight schools in our class is GREAT!! fek. Among The Top Eight In The State! A Time of Excitement!!! Uneventful is definitely not a word to describe this year’s Homecoming activities. Adjectives such as exciting, spirited, nerve-racking and mischievious do get the job done. Everyone got caught up in the mood of Homecoming. For some, it meant weeks of sincere (?) practice for the Homecoming Play. Because of an automobile accident Mrs. Bertolino was involved in, she was unable to finish this year’s production. Being the type of person Mrs. Sanvi is. she assisted the directing in a terrific way and “Our Miss Brooks” was carried off with very few slip ups. Many tears were shed that night as the Queen was crowned. Even though the girls appeared to be calm, cool, and collected, underneath the smiles and pretty dresses they were a bundle of nerves, each hoping their hoop wouldn’t come up as they bowed or they wouldn’t trip coming down the stairs. Not only were the candidates and their attendants nervous, hut also the girl who served as the first Mistress of Ceremonies. The following week was filled with fun and a little frustration as everyone worked furiously to complete their floats by Friday afternoon. The Juniors took first place while the Freshmen got second. It was no surprise that the Seniors didn’t place. Time out was taken from work to have a little fun over in Gillespie as a couple carloads of kids went and put signs with various messages. A little Homecoming spirit is fun. Friday came too soon for some as they rushed to add the final touches on their floats. Some weren’t satisfied with just putting up signs in the nearby town. So as the bell rang to end sixth hour, many students made their way to the parking lot where a convoy of about 20 cars went to display the school spriit of Staunton High. The parade started around 2:30 at the Catholic School. A detour was put into the route so the parade could be taken past Mrs. Bertolino’s house. Since it was her birthday, October 10th, the hand played Happy Birthday to her, which brought a tear or two to some. In spite of a rousing pep session and a great assembly program by Larry Daniel, the karate expert, the Bulldogs were unable to defeat the Miners. The final score being 26-0. Wrapping up the Homecoming activities was the Homecoming Dance. Music was provided by a terrific group named “Griffin. For some the evening was more than they had hoped and for others the night turned out a little different- ly than expected. All in all it was an eventful time. It was a beautiful sunny day. As usual, however, we couldn’t get by without a few problems. The wind blew. The senior float broke down (poor Miss Long) and Jimmy Bianco couldn’t be found (poor Mary Henke). The band was on key as always and did a special performance for Mrs. Bertolino at her residence. The band performed that old favorite “Happy Birthday to You!” (We missed you Mrs. Bertolino!) Congratulations to the Class of 1982 for taking 1st place in floats and to the Class of 1984 for 1st place in the stunt. 31 FACULTY,STUDENTS AND SECRETARIES Freshmen 34 Sharon Balke Darla Banovic Roger Banovz Brian Basso Ann Baum Mike Bekeske Cheri Bentrup Tony Bianco Mark Biznek Sharon Bodi Kim Boster Ann Boston Denise Brown I arry Caldieraro Penny Colley Nikki Coyne Carla Dannis Phil Evans John Foster Missy Frey Jolene Funk Randy Harbison Tracy Hartmas Gerald Haustein Tom Heigert Linda Henehan Mary Hering Brian Highlander Candy Hiller Lauren Hinthome Steve Huffman Carol Hughes Charles Ivey Katrina Jenkins Terry Jensen 1984 Steve Knop Graig Kuba Michelle Landrem Mike Lane Rodney Leetham Debbie Johnson John Karl Steve Katich Kris Kinder Rick Kinder Allan Lolie Robin Matejka Jon McDowell Lisa Mengelkamp Don Miller Lisa Moore Ginger Morris Kim Mueller Earnie Murphy Brian Paitz Kris Pickerill Jim Pomatto Jim Rae Wayne Roberts Suellen Rotsch Tom Scherff Karen Schulmeister Kevin Schulmeister Mary Ann Scroggins Harry Senaldi Brian Sherfy Dirmtria Sies Andy Smitb .. Since this was Mrs. Rotsch’s last year as NHS sponsor, due to her retirement, she was commended for the excellent job she has done. a The ceremony, held on April 27, 1981, was followed by a reception in the cafete- ria. Mr. Rull is co-sponsor of the NHS. Not only has Mrs. Rotsch shown ex- cellence in the area of teaching, but also her versatility in other areas as well. She has been Dean of Girls, Student Council advisor, National Honor Soci- ety sponsor and has served as a Guid- ance Counselor. She has been an active part of Staunton High School for 21 years and will be missed by all. A Tribute We have to say good-bye to a lady we all respect and love. She is committed to teaching and learning, which at school she places all above. Although we wish her luck, we are sad to see her go. Mrs. Rotsch is a fine teacher who we are all glad to know. She has brought many through bad times with her help, guidance and understanding These are a few of her qualities which make her outstanding. She always does her daily routine with a smile upon her face. She readily accepts new ideas believing everything has its place. In her classroom she teaches but is always eager to learn something new. And so Mrs. Rotsch we say good-bye with this farewell to you. bdc Sing, Sing A Song! M a r c h M a r c h M a r c h Brrr!! How do you like my new hat? The Staunton Marching Bulldogs are an important part of our high school. They are a very active group. The Band is one of the few groups which is active all year round. During the summer and fall there are pa- rades, football shows and field show competitions. Dur- ing the winter and spring there is pep band, concerts, and contests. During the past school year the band participated in two field show competitions, three concerts and one contest. Preparing for any performance means practice. The practices for field shows are by far the most strenu- ous. They sometimes had rehearsals for six hours a day. They have shown more than once that the practices are rewarding in the end. Concert Band Baseball 1981 First Row: Coach Deist, Roger Banovz, Barry Wriede, Dean Schulmeister. But the athletes of SHS were present for the All Sports’ Banquet. This evening provided an opportunity for stu- dents, coaches, and parents to review all the sporting events. It was a time of recognizing Shawn Bates as many of the coaches right-hand man and for awarding Phil Yamik the Strike-out Award. Dori Hartman, Nikki Coyne and Kim Mueller were con- gratulated on their participation at the State Track Meet. Most of the coaches gave glowing reports of their particular team’s season. Coach Diest summed up the baseball teams season well. He said, “We had fun.” Coach Martin is sure the Boys’ Track team will improve. Topping off the evening was the presentation of the plaque by the Student Council to Coach Held and her volleyball team. It was given in recognition of their fine season and in succeeding on going to State. “It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.” Gimme That Lightman-Mark Martinelli k The 1981 Spring Show and Con- cert was a great Success. Country music, this year’s current craze sweeping the country, was this year’s theme. The concert consist- ed of some of the most popular country hits, such as: “Lady” and “Sail Away”. Soloist for the con- cert was Bill Roberts who sang “She Believes in Me”. After a brief intermission, the stage was set for the choir to per- form its renditions of the hit songs from the Rogers and Hammer- stein musical Oklahoma! The sto- ry revolves around the life of peo- ple homesteading the Midwest. Soloists for Oklahoma! were Diana Bruhn, Alice Morgan, Claire Heidbrink singin-, “Oh What a Beautiful Morning”, Linda Biznek singing “I Cain’t Say No”, Mary Henke singing “Many a New Day”, and Cindy Yarnik singing “Out of My Dreams”.
