In May of this year, the choirs for the first time had the privilege of going on an overnight tour in Carmi, Illinois, Miss Vandenbark’s home town. The three groups performed at the Grade School, High School, and the Baptist Church for the townspeo- ple. This concert tour concluded Miss Vandenbark’s teaching career at Staunton High and the choirs would like to express their gratitude and wish her much success in the future. Girls’ Glee Club and Soloist Tammy. Flower presentations to Miss Vandcnbark. 30 Narrator Eric Pingolt Stage Band Throughout the year, the stage band has been working very hard playing for activities such as Homecoming Play, Senior Play and Spring Concert. They did a good job of bringing back songs from the 30’s and 40's which were enjoyed by everyone at the Spring Concert. The Swing Choir was also outstand- ing in singing a medley of tunes from the Beatles and John Denver. 31 Swing Choir This year's Spring Concert was dedi- cated to our superintendent, Mr. Diel, in honor of his retirement. A dedica- tion speech was given by Art Allen, president of the school board. Senior awards were given to all graduating members of the band and Karen Hering received the Majorette and Sweet Sixteen Awards. 32 First Annual All-Sports Banquet The Echo Staff Terry Piepcr - Photographer; Judy Hartman - Organizations: Tammy Fletcher - Classes: Jeannine Randle - Activ- ities: Amy Renner - Classes: Cheryl Ahrens - Classes; Keith Gockel - Sports; Carla Graves - Co-Editor; Ellise Schuctte - Activities; Val Yarnik - Activities; Karen Cargnoni - Organizations; Kim Maxwell - Photographer: Liz Link - Girl's Spons, Cover Design: Sue Travis - Editor; John Hering - Sports; Jerry Foster - Photographer. 36 VARSITY Cheerleaders JUNIOR VARSITY 37 Student Council FIRST ROW: Pam Williams. Cross Country Ted Hancock, John Hering, Richard Barber, Keith Gocker, Jay Edminston, Tom Spears, Paul Zimmer, John Maroso. For the first time this year, SHS had a cross country team. The school year had already begun when it was decided we could have a team, so it was hard to schedule meets, but not nearly so hard as getting in shape. Cross country is a sport where the team with the least points wins. The position each contestant comes in is the number of points he gets. Only five members from each team score. We had seven meets and district. We beat Bunker Hill 28-27. Their 61 meet winning streak had been broken the week before by Carlinville. The best three mile time was 16.05 by Tom Spears. 54 One more lap to go! What's so interesting? Look at that dandruff! He decided to retire after 41 years of service to education as a teacher, a coach, and a superintendent. He,has served well here at ( SHS, and we wish him farewell and the best of luck in his retirement. When asked for a few words, Mr. Diel gives us these words of advice: To all graduates I offer congratulations and wish you continued success in making the Grade in Life's School. We call gradua- tion commencement because you are to start on a new and perhaps harder game or course in adult life. To make the Grade in Life's School , you need to plan your life. It is now time for you to plan, so you may wish to keep a few j sayings in mind. 1. Life is like a spelling book, the words get harder as you go along. 2. You will gain wisdom if you don't think you already have it all. 3. Failure is the line of least persistence. 4. Don't be a no show for work. 5. Conservation is saving time, talents, and money. 6. A big heart goes farther than a big head. 7. The heart of advanced education is the education of the heart. 8. You are never so tall as when you stoop to help others. 82 MR.
