This was the first season for Mr. Massie at Staunton, although he was previously a coach at Hillsboro. Our hopes fell as injuries mounted, two big ones in one game. Both backs. Bill Marcuzzo and his replacement Mike Renner, were hurt on our own field in the game with Southwestern. We came back with a makeshift team and won the last three out of four games. Our overall average was 7-3 with a tie game with Carlinville. Our conference record was 3-2 with a tie with Carlinville. Norm Heigert made the all- conference team and Don Sullivan. Robert Lietz. Randy Best, and Daryl Schuette made all conference honorable mention. We placed fourth in conference standings. KNEELING D Schuette. J Schmjdt. D Suhrcnbrock. N Heigert. T McBride. M Pirok. R Best. This 1973-74 season was successful for the Staunton Varsity Basketball team. Although they were co-champs of the South Central VARSITY BASKETBALL Conference in a three-way tie with Nokomis and 73-74 Carlinville. it was the first time since 1959 that they had led in the conference. The Bulldogs had an overall record of 15-11. a big change from years gone by. They outscored their opponents 1762 to 1608 and averaged 70.5 points a game as compared to their opponents 64.3 game point average. This change could be attributed to a new head coach, last’s year’s J.V. coach. Randy Legendre. The season saw only one injury ; Daryl Schuette broke his foot late in the season. After this season, the Bulldogs' goal is to be CONFERENCE CHAMPS in 1975. Good luck Bulldogs. TEAMS Virdcn Girard Mt. They soon gained their self-composure by winning first place in the float contest. (Way to go Frosh!) They soon adjusted to the high school society. The guys had dreams of becoming super-athletes; the girls dreamed of senior guys. In the years to follow, their attitudes and ideas will change such that they will become the leaders of our school. Among those pictured are the future Homecoming Queen. Student Council President. Lettermen. and perhaps later leaders of our community. No wonder such pride is taken in the class of 1977. 74 Class Officers: Greg Herbcck. Secretary; Katrina Gerhardt. Vice President. Vickie Fiori. Treasurer. Bob Garino. They no longer wore that terrified expression that had labeled them as Frosh. They tried to take on an air of superiority by ‘ helpfully guiding” the incoming freshmen. In September the majority of the class became nature lovers, like it or not. The school was invaded by an army of sophomores armed with nets in hot pursuit of specimens for their bug collections. The main goal for most sophomores was to get their license, no matter what! Luckily they managed to do this without killing anyone in the process. Actually, the Sophomore class is a credit to the school. They have displayed large amounts of spirit and leadership. Hang in there class of 1976. Class Officers: Becky Boetcher. It also means taking on the responsibility of operating the concession stands and organizing the prom. Being a Junior class officer means “going out on a ledge” for their class as well as for their picture. They were first in the cafeteria line, first to leave assemblies, first in the cafeteria line, first in float contest (oh well, we ran a good second), and finally they were first in the cafeteria line. As the year came to a close, the Seniors found that everything they did was either a “first” or a “last”. They had played their last football game, marched their last parade, given their last concert, and performed in their last play. They had also flunked their last test, received their last blue slip, heard their last English lecture, and stayed for their last tenth hour. However, as they leave the Seniors have thoughts about their first college, their first choice of careers, their first class reu- nion. and for some their first marriage. CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 74! When school begins, they start practicing for football shows, which they perform at every home game. Concert Band begins at the close of football season. They perform three concerts a season, the last being in May. This is the Fine Arts Festival, combining an art exhibit. band concert, and choir performance. Therefore, the Red Roses began. They have continued to dance at the half-times of all home varsity basketball games. This year, for the first time, they were invited to dance at the Macoupin County Tournament held in Gillespie. At the time of tryouts. Mrs. Bertolino. the sponsor, chooses twelve Red Roses and two substitutes. These fourteen girls attend summer dancing camp, at which time they learn new dances to perform at the half-times.
