The theme of this year's Echo, This is Your Life, Staunton High, ” has been carried out by picture through the yearbook. We are grateful to those people who have donated pictures. The Rembrandt Studios have been most co-operative. The cost of this year's book will be approximately $1,000, and has 76 pages. We are indebted to the following organizations for dona- tions: Magazine sales, $250; Senior Class, $50; Student Council, $25; and F. H. A., $15. The chimes sounded precisely at four and again at seven, calling the audience into an hour of reverence for the birth of our King. The Christmas story unfolded on a stage set in blue satin. The white and gold costumes of the angels, and the royal colors of the nativity groups complemented both the background and the blue and silver trees. The stage was then transformed into a cathedral background for a concert of Christmas music by the choir under the direction of Mrs. Schuetze. HZ: STUDENT COUNCIL The student council has been very active throughout the past year. The council sponsored magazine sales, assembly programs, a masquer- ade party, a Christmas activity hour, and honored the school employ- ees with Christmas gifts. A party was held on Valentine’s Day, and $80 was sent to CARE in the name of the student body. The main objective this year was to promote better school spirit. Bulldog pins were sold, conference plaques were ordered, and a pep club was organized. This year the students on the council received membership cards and pins. Every six weeks one social gathering was held for the mem- bers. One of the gatherings was enjoyed at Pere Marquette. At the end of the year, the council provides trophies for the out- standing senior boy and girl. The award is based on scholarship and citizenship. The council’s last contribution for the year was an activity board to be placed in front of the gym to advertise all school functions. Its approximate cost was $200. Wayne Zude, Leroy Luketich, Rodney Jacobs, Margery Menges, George Bruce, Maxine Pas- chen, JoAnn Vesper. DON RUSSELL 58 During the last year our high school band has played a vital part in many school activities. The football games would not have seemed complete without the colorful high stepping marching band performing its intricate formations. This year the thirty-six piece marching band had the privilege of participating in Southern Illinois University's homecoming parade. The pep band playing for the pep meetings and basketball games created a stronger feeling of school spirit which no doubt inspired our team. On January 26, 1958, the concert band gave its first public performance of the year. Later in the season, exchange concerts were given at Bunkerhill and Mt. Olive. A spring concert was given on April 27, 1958. The band will complete a very successful year by giving an out-of- door concert at the city park in June. FIRST ROW: H. Schroedel, J. Football Games Joanie, Sandie, Diana, and Cheerleaders Homecoming parade CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders, along with their sponsor, Mrs. Rule, the pep club, and the pep band directed by Mr. Russell, did a great deal this year to create enthusiasm among the student body. Al- though the pep club was newly organized, it did help to promote a better school spirit at the games. A new system was devised this year for the selection of cheer- leaders. Each girl who was interested filled out an application. Grades were checked and the applicants were required to have at least a C average and no failing grades. The candidates were then screened by the faculty and the final step was selection by a committee. Cheerleaders for the year 1958-59 are: Ruth Brauer, Diana Tiburzi, Jackie Streeb, Joyce Eller, Sharon Balen, and Meridell Coalson. The club compiled a record of 6- 3-1. Not since 1948, has a Staunton Club had as much success. The following figures show the poten- tial of this club: total offense for the season was 3. 703 yds. gained as compared to the 3.180 compiled by our opponents. The one tie which hindered our title conference might be attributed to the flu epi- demic which infested practically our entire squad.
