At a special election held February 20. 1954, the Staunton Community Unit District No. 6 was authorized to build a new elementary school with special departments de- signed for use by both high school and elementary school. Although the building was not complete, school officially opened September 1, 1956. An Open House from 1:30 to 2:15 preceded the formal dedication of the new building. Participating in the ceremonies were: Concert - Staunton High School band Invocation - Reverend Kenneth Bower Piano solo - Mary Haferkamp Vocal solo - Joan Jensen Presentation of school board - Lewis W. Jacobs, President Introduction of speaker - J. Harold Diel, Superintendent Speaker - Dr. H. J. Long, President of Greenville College Presentation of the Building to Mr. Jacobs - Architect Edward A. Kane administration Graduating Seniors - your education has begun. Your high school training is your foundation. Whether or not you build on your foundation now is up to you. You need to build on this foundation even if you do not attend college. You must continue to grow in knowledge day by day. if you want to succeed in any endeavor. The following lines of a well-known poem expresses well the above idea: If you think you can. you will. If you think you dare not, you won’t. For out in this world we find. Success begins with a fellow's will. It's all in the state of mind. Mr. Diei, M. S., University of Illinois; Lucille, Secretary B. E.. Eastern Illinois State College; Superintendent. ----------HOARD OF EDUCATION---------------------------------- 8 First row: Ervin Hasse, Lewis Jacobs, F. W. Stallmann, Robert Ackerman. Second row: Raymond R. France, Charles Sievers, John P. Vesper. Your school and your community are as good as you choose to make them. In the hurry and scurry of a machine age, the increased pressures of economic competition, and the uncertainty of world conditions, we are apt to overlook some very important values. A FRIENDLY SMILE, A CHEERFUL GREETING, A HELPFUL HAND, A COURTEOUS MANNER COSTS LITTLE BUT PAYS EXCELLENT DIVI- DENDS. These thoughtful acts toward both friends AND strangers reflect well wherever you may be. Let's each do an even better job than we have in the past toward practicing these very worth- while attitudes. FACULTY NORMA, Secretary MR. BINGMAN M. S., University of Illinois; B. It is with a bit of sadness that we write our history, which means that now we are ready to leave Staunton Community High School. As we glance back over four years of work, fun, and inspiration many highlights come to mind: The first day of school and those frightening SENIORS. First maid of honor two years straight and then QUEEN for two years. One of the most beautiful proms ever (or so we've been told). Highly honored athletes, homecoming plays, vesper services, speech and music con- test, and parties too numerous to mention. 14 Four glorious years that will always remain in a very special place in our hearts. CHRISTMAS VESPERS VESPER SERVICE Gary, Wayne, Jerry Russell, Walter, Marvin, Kay, Ada, and Art Grace, and Nancy . ------------------------------- One-hundred sixty-four pupils combined their talents to present the annual traditional Vespers on December 16. Promptly at four o'clock and again at seven the chimes signaled the beginning of the service. A medley of Christmas carols, played by Carol Stemickle and Mary Haferkamp, and beauti- fully lighted Christmas trees set the mood for the audience. Directed by Mrs. Yakos and read by Paul Menges, the story, The World's First Christmas Gift,” revealed live scenes through the scrim. The stage, with its back drop of blue satin and its church windows, drawn by Dale Ott, and painted by the speech class combined with Christmas trees and poinsettias, formed a perfect setting for the second part which was given by the mixed chorus, under the direction of Mr. Teter.
