THE SENIOR CLASS OF STAUNTON HIGH SCHOOL THE ECHO OF 1955 A RECORD OF HOW WE WORK HOW WE PLAY HOW WE LIVE TOGETHER To our Staunton graduates I say CONGRATULA- TIONS and I offer one statement of caution. Do NOT depend too much on GENIUS. Did you know that the genius of Lincoln, Edison, Ford and others, when analyzed, boils down to the ABILITY TO DO HARD WORK? All of these men labored long into the night and diligently during the daylight hours, mastering the problems that gave us comforts, lux- ury and ever-ready conveniences of today. J, HAROLD DIEL, Superintendent Congratulations to the seniors upon the completion of another part of your educational growth. During your life you have within your power to add to the problems of soceity or--to help solve them. To help solve them you need to be well informed. Your opinions should be based upon facts as distin- guished from gossip, rumor or propaganda. Cul- tivate an attitude of understanding and apprecia- tion of the rights of others and a willingness to do your part. W.K. WILUAMS Custodians BEN PICKERING, JERRY SHARP JOHN SCHNAARE CLASS HISTORY In 1952 seventy-nine greeny freshmen entered Staunton Community High School. This class was so green it took us all year to elect class officers. As soon as that was accomplished we had our Freshman Party, which again mark- ed our individuality. Remember, the class president washed the dishes! As sophomores we grew both brave and lazy. This year we didn't do anything. During our junior year we were really on the ball. We gave the most successful Halloween Party, had the best Prom and had one of the better floats. As seniors our thoughts were turned toward graduation and the future. To start off we finally elected a Homecoming Queen. Long live Elitra! After that we really got rolling and gave a party to raise money that would help us to sponsor our yearbook of 54-55. And now as we sadly leave S. C. H. S. we know that we will long remember the good times we had and just ever so slightly, we feel that same green feeling as we enter into the world as fresh- men. STAUNTON HIGH SCHOOL BAND If you are a member of the Staunton High School Band, you are a part of many activities and the enthusi asm which is so essential to athletic events. As a band member you may be a part of the colorful marching group who perform in all kinds of weather. Who doesn't thrill to the national anthem, the lively step of the majorettes, the cadence of the drums and the intricate formations of the band? A pep band has helped to build enthusiasm for our basketball games and to make the team feel that they are being encouraged. The band, sponsored by the Band Parents Association, attended the Marine Band Concert in Spring- field. They presented a formal spring concert and participated in the annual music contest sponsored by the Illinois High School Association. Mr. Johnson and his band completed a very busy and successful school year with an outdoor concert in the City Park. Senior replacements, new formations, and change of repertoire require summer drills for the Staun- ton High School Band. STAUNTON HIGH DANCE BAND Front row, left to right: R. Fleming, D. Barton, J.
