HECY OF 1955 the gym Here we found Marne Burgess phy srcal educatron teacher and Beth jackrns grrls basketball coach pleased wrth therr wrnnrng team On the other srde were Tommy Pope boys physrcal educrtron teacher and rkc Harrrs football corch grvrng therr boys some pornters on basketball Charles Fermster wrest Irng coach was really pleased wrth hrs boys they only had one rn the hosprtal from the las match Gorng back to the marn burldrng we found Rry Bowre teachrng Scrence Nancy Krrder Englrsh I lrry Freeze Socral Lrvrng and Shelbrt Speaks Shorthand An art class had been add ed taught by Sue Strlwell Passrng we notrced that she had the well known artrsts of the town Marjory Klutz and Mary Alrce Mc Laughlrn speakrng to her class From SHS we xentured to Davre Axenuc Prrncrprl Franklrn Whrte showed us around the school and I rccognrzed such teachers as and Betty Barley teachrng lasses of trny tots Before lunch we returned and found Mayor Alexander strll rn conference We went to Rodneys Drner an exclusrve restaurant on the outskrrts of town operated by Rodney Drxon where we had a delrcrous meal servel by wartresses Sylxra Steelman and osephrne Tucker Upon leavrng we vrsrted some of the churches There we saw Martha Turnrpseed Relrgrous Educatron Drrector md Gene Iones Mrnrster practrcrng wrth members of the church for a Chrrstmts Party Next we went to Mrtchell College Dean Brll johnson showed us around many new burld rngs Nancy Keever professor of French was rn deep drscussron wrth her class whrle Sylvrr Walsh well known pranrst was practrcrng for a concert After vrsrtrng the marn places I went to some of the stores I notrced a fabulous ladres shop Bettys owned by Betty Bartley Passrng the Merchants and Farmers Bank Buzz rn formed me that Anne Knox was now presrdent and Peggy Warlrck vrce presrdent Enterrng the bank we saw Freddy Duncan owner of Dun cans Plumbrng and Heatrng and Max Hol land hrs manager deposrtrng money Work mg as cashrers were Ronald Hooks Barbara Nash and Pat Gosnell After the brref vrsrt we ventured on through the streets I notrced many new shops and stores such as Pooles 5 8. 10 operated by Frances Poole Rocks Dancrng School where jrmmy Roland was tryrng to teach Gone Krds to freeze and an Acrobatrc School taught by Mrssy Morrrson Further down the street was McLesters Mark et now the largest food store rn town I no trced though that ohn strll worked behrnd the meat counter Passrng a theater I saw that oanne Krser was starrrng rn a movre that nrght Jerry Grbson manager of all the thea ters was puttrng her name up rn he rdlrghts As I walked down the street I saw under Mrtchells Recapprng Servrce Dm Tarman Mrtchell and hrs assrstants Charles Poplrn and Davrd Chrrstre reparrrng a punctured trre As we passed Parks Realty Co Sherrrll and hrs rssrsrant D Gantt were rn deep drscussron I was allowed to see Mayor Alexander and rfter all plans were made we went to le Smack for a qurck brte to eat Crrrol Hols houser Tommy Sheepdog Weeks and Bobby Holland were there but now they were yornt Workrng for them were Norman Hodges Der mont Saunders and Bobby Sharpe Because Mayor Alexander had a short nouncement to make at the Radro Statron be fore the parade started we qurckly made our way there Workrng as an announcer was Wayne Abernathy and helprng hrm was Gene Scarborough the engrneer I was told that TV Statron was rn the process of berng burlt to be called WSTV jerry Young Buddy Gaf ney and I D Gantt were the brg men around town who were responsrble for thrs A new hotel was berng constructed Charlre Plyler a famous archrtect had drawn the plans for rt Hrs supervrsors Elbert Campbell rmmy Prevatte and Ralph Mrlam were dorng a gooj rob rn gettrng the twenty Exe story burldrng started We returned to town rust rn time for the begrnnrng of the parade I spent all the next day collectrng rnformatron and mxterral about our candrdate for Mrss America As I boarded the plane headed for Calr fornra I glanced around me once agarn My how the town had grown' It just drdnt seem possrble that one town could grow so much But lrke the town so had the people We were now adults Irxrng entrrely new and drfferent Ines Maybe there were some that had not reached therr goal but most of those who had trred hard had not failed Anyway that rs how I see rt MACIE DAY Clan Prophet 4 4 - N 5 C I 4 4 4 , 4 , 4 4 4 4 , 4 I 7 4 , .
