HECY OF 1955 the gym Here we found Marne Burgess phy srcal educatron teacher and Beth jackrns grrls basketball coach pleased wrth therr wrnnrng team On the other srde were Tommy Pope boys physrcal educrtron teacher and rkc Harrrs football corch grvrng therr boys some pornters on basketball Charles Fermster wrest Irng coach was really pleased wrth hrs boys they only had one rn the hosprtal from the las match Gorng back to the marn burldrng we found Rry Bowre teachrng Scrence Nancy Krrder Englrsh I lrry Freeze Socral Lrvrng and Shelbrt Speaks Shorthand An art class had been add ed taught by Sue Strlwell Passrng we notrced that she had the well known artrsts of the town Marjory Klutz and Mary Alrce Mc Laughlrn speakrng to her class From SHS we xentured to Davre Axenuc Prrncrprl Franklrn Whrte showed us around the school and I rccognrzed such teachers as and Betty Barley teachrng lasses of trny tots Before lunch we returned and found Mayor Alexander strll rn conference We went to Rodneys Drner an exclusrve restaurant on the outskrrts of town operated by Rodney Drxon where we had a delrcrous meal servel by wartresses Sylxra Steelman and osephrne Tucker Upon leavrng we vrsrted some of the churches There we saw Martha Turnrpseed Relrgrous Educatron Drrector md Gene Iones Mrnrster practrcrng wrth members of the church for a Chrrstmts Party Next we went to Mrtchell College Dean Brll johnson showed us around many new burld rngs Nancy Keever professor of French was rn deep drscussron wrth her class whrle Sylvrr Walsh well known pranrst was practrcrng for a concert After vrsrtrng the marn places I went to some of the stores I notrced a fabulous ladres shop Bettys owned by Betty Bartley Passrng the Merchants and Farmers Bank Buzz rn formed me that Anne Knox was now presrdent and Peggy Warlrck vrce presrdent Enterrng the bank we saw Freddy Duncan owner of Dun cans Plumbrng and Heatrng and Max Hol land hrs manager deposrtrng money Work mg as cashrers were Ronald Hooks Barbara Nash and Pat Gosnell After the brref vrsrt we ventured on through the streets I notrced many new shops and stores such as Pooles 5 8. 10 operated by Frances Poole Rocks Dancrng School where jrmmy Roland was tryrng to teach Gone Krds to freeze and an Acrobatrc School taught by Mrssy Morrrson Further down the street was McLesters Mark et now the largest food store rn town I no trced though that ohn strll worked behrnd the meat counter Passrng a theater I saw that oanne Krser was starrrng rn a movre that nrght Jerry Grbson manager of all the thea ters was puttrng her name up rn he rdlrghts As I walked down the street I saw under Mrtchells Recapprng Servrce Dm Tarman Mrtchell and hrs assrstants Charles Poplrn and Davrd Chrrstre reparrrng a punctured trre As we passed Parks Realty Co Sherrrll and hrs rssrsrant D Gantt were rn deep drscussron I was allowed to see Mayor Alexander and rfter all plans were made we went to le Smack for a qurck brte to eat Crrrol Hols houser Tommy Sheepdog Weeks and Bobby Holland were there but now they were yornt Workrng for them were Norman Hodges Der mont Saunders and Bobby Sharpe Because Mayor Alexander had a short nouncement to make at the Radro Statron be fore the parade started we qurckly made our way there Workrng as an announcer was Wayne Abernathy and helprng hrm was Gene Scarborough the engrneer I was told that TV Statron was rn the process of berng burlt to be called WSTV jerry Young Buddy Gaf ney and I D Gantt were the brg men around town who were responsrble for thrs A new hotel was berng constructed Charlre Plyler a famous archrtect had drawn the plans for rt Hrs supervrsors Elbert Campbell rmmy Prevatte and Ralph Mrlam were dorng a gooj rob rn gettrng the twenty Exe story burldrng started We returned to town rust rn time for the begrnnrng of the parade I spent all the next day collectrng rnformatron and mxterral about our candrdate for Mrss America As I boarded the plane headed for Calr fornra I glanced around me once agarn My how the town had grown' It just drdnt seem possrble that one town could grow so much But lrke the town so had the people We were now adults Irxrng entrrely new and drfferent Ines Maybe there were some that had not reached therr goal but most of those who had trred hard had not failed Anyway that rs how I see rt MACIE DAY Clan Prophet 4 4 - N 5 C I 4 4 4 , 4 , 4 4 4 4 , 4 I 7 4 , . Trme In the near future between the years l960 and 1965 Berng a reporter rs certunly not an easy job It calls for a person berng prepared to be sent day or nrght to anyplace Thrs assrgnment though vtas to be my most pleasant one The edrtor of the Hollywood Sttr Dyeann Bunch wts sendrng me back home to cover the story of North Carolrnas candrdate for Mrss Amerrca Ann Raymer I was to rntervrew all frrends md rclatnes Thrs was to be 1 brg story for thc Hollywood Star and I was really thrrlled wrth gettrng the as srgnment As our plane arrrved rn New York the next day I learned that we were to have an over nrght stay there Srnce we were gorng to be there for a whrle I decrded to buy a new dress and have drnner at some nrght club I went to Saks Frfth Avenue and was pl as antlv surprrsed to see that anrce Tutterow and Wrnrfred Kelly were top models there We chatted for a whrle and they suggested places to go for a good meal and entertarnment We decrded to have drnner together and whrl passrng the Stork Club we notrced on the mar quee that Wayne Lowe and hrs Starlrghters consrstrng of Irmmy Harmon johnny Rhea Irmmy Thorneburg Nathan Moore and Bobby Rogers were appearrng there We Just couldnt mrss thrs' Westbrook Fowler also appeared wrth the band dorng her torchy versron of Blue Moon I notrced many Statesvrllrans workrng there udy Drumheller the crgarette grrl and wartresses Shrrley Byrd Joyce Faulk Sue Chambers Peggy Compton and Vrrgrnra Harre After a long chat wrth the lot of them I returned to my room at the Hotel Madrson owned by jrmmy Madrson who now has a charn of them There I recognrzed the bellhop as Clyde Whrte Early the next mornrng arrrvrng at the arr port I notrced mrllronarress Jane Clark gettrng ready to board a plane for Europe After co prlots Larry Poole and Robert Brrstol had got ten the plane well on the way I notrced ste wardess Wanda Beaver ardrng Arelene Bal sax age one of the Globetrotters by putting a prllovt under her head Also on the plane re turnrng from a furnrture conventron were Stan Sternberger and Kalman Gordon As the plane crrcled Statesvrlle I notrced the enlargement of the town How could rt hate CLASS PROP grown so much rn so short a trme but rt had been almost ten years srnce I had seen rt Descendrng from the plane I notrced two Crvrl Arr Patrol members talkrng vsrth trcket agent rmmy Henderson I recognrzed jane Weatherford commander of the Crxrl Arr Patrol and Drana Redmond natronal head Cab drrxer Charles Rutledge took me to the telegraph office to send a telegram to Calr fornra Whrle there I went to the Vance Ho cl Soda Shop for a newspaper I notrced that Foy Brown was strll workrng as the soda yerk but now he managed the place and had as hrs as srstant J W Gentle Readrng rn the paper that the brg Chrrstmas parade was to be held the next drv and that Mrss North Carolrna would be rrdrng rn rt I decrded to see some of the crty ofhcrals about the order of the days festrvrtres I sought the address of Mayor Tommy Alexander and fmally was told by Dorrs Brrncefield hrs secrettry that he was out of town but would be back the next day The next mornrng I dropnel rn hrs oHice but he was rn conference wrth Crtv Manager Ioe Tomlrn presrdent of The Womans Club Lrla McGeachy and members of th school board Harry Speaks Brett Summers Tommy Chandler Duke Ellrs and Frank McKay I de crded to pass the trme by tourrng the town Walkrng down the street I passed one of the three new hosprtals Leavrng the hosprtal was Mrs Shrrley Rogers Walker wrth her small daughter I stopped for a mrnute and saw the head nurse Lula Drshman grvrng her assrstant Nancy Menscer and the lab technrcran Betty Lou Walters drrectrons As I passed through the maternrty ward I saw Dr Carrol Cash and hrs nurse jane McGrnn admrrrng the new daughter of Mary Davrs now Mrs Pete Gos ne When I left the hosprtal I hrred myself a gurde because I knew I could never see all of the new Statesvrlle by myself George Buzzy Knox assrsted me rn thrs manner and we stop ped first to get some gas at Hrnsons Auto Serwrce owned by Carol Angle Hrnson We were grven prompt servrce by hrs helpers Danny Kale and jerry Sherrrll We rmmedrately set out to rrsrt the schools naturally Senror Hrgh School frrst We talked wrth the prmcrpal Loure Crye and I notrced that Shelva Carn hrs secretary was flndrng the duplrcatrng machrne a Irttle drfhcult to handle We xrsrted each of the teachers begrnnrng at T ' 4 . 4 -' 4 . 2 .
